I have been asking the same thing about the eggs and ee. I dont think you can. if you want to find the blue one you probably have to separate them til they lay. process of elimination.I am behaving, I just walked too much. I didnt know i tore it open. OK, I am not behaving. I probably need a spanking.

the ees also take a while to start laying, longer then most. somewhere in the back of my poor brain i am seeing a # 22 weeks but dont quote me on that. if mine is laying its a brown egg. and she should be from this springs hatch. i only have one and she is not very good looking so if i dont see a blue or green egg soon I am going to live up to my name. Twist, I dont know why but you bring out the devil in me. there are many things I would like to say to you right now and every single one of them would get me bumped off of her. I will say this, I know where you store it and when you make it and its not THAT far away.

I know how disappointing it is not to get blue or green eggs. Thanks Wishing for the genetics. Never thought of it that way, just figured it was the luck (or lack) of the draw. LOL. I got a green legged EE and couldn't wait to get blue or green eggs but she doesn't have a pea comb - has a big floppy one. She does lay nice big light brown eggs though. Question - how can you tell about comb at one day old? My bantam EE lays the cutest little pink eggs.

My girls have been rather unsettled and flighty today. We got a touch of what you folks in the north have had. It has been really windy -25-30mph- so there have been pine cones and dead tree branches blowing about plus the high here in sunny Florida was only about 65. I know, I know - no sympathy but it does stress my babies. Personally, I'm loving it. Got to wear long sleeves and made a big pot of chili for football tomorrow.

Leg color is not related to blue eggs at all. Having a pea comb is the best indicator. It is more likely that a pullet carries the gene for blue shells since those genes are right next to the pea genes and they tend to get passed along together. (That's if your EE/OEs were created with Ameraucana or Araucana stock, if they're from Legbars, the pea combs have been bred out.) The green egg means she has the gene for blue shells and some genes for brown, which gets coated over the blue shells to make them green or olive. The sky-blue layer does not have genes for brown, so the blue shell is the same color inside and out. I think they can have either one or two copies of the blue gene, 2 copies making the blue more intense. EEs can take a while to start, so I'd give them some time. Heck, I'd even take the brown/pink layers as most of mine have slowed to near zero, egg-wise.

Reverse bribery with the fudge is an excellent tactic! You can tell granny is used to caring for others cause she doesn't think to care for herself. Everyone here is so good with reminding her. (Are you listening, granny?)
wings, every thing you just said about the ee went over my head. LOL, sorry. mine was bought from tsc and has a little comb thats wrinkled as bad as my ol man. is that pea?

Yes granny that is a pea comb!

There are three shell color genes white, brown and blue. If a hen gets a brown gene from one parent and a blue gene from the other parent she will lay a green egg. The egg will start out blue and as it moves through the egg tubes it will get coated with brown thus the egg is green.

all i see is brown then. I got a pig in a polk. LOL I seen something today for the first time ever. a hen squatting. LOL it was very funny to see. I had the new roo by himself in the barn and when i opened the door all my big hens were lined up in the coop looking. I took him over there and a buff just flattened to the ground, the others were either pecking him under the chin or preening him and they were gathered all around him . it was amazing to watch . he has a harem. I had 6 roosters in there and unfortunately the old boss is out. there is a new sheriff in town. all the other roos didnt care and he didnt bother them but my little sizzle was not having it and repeat attacks from him earned him a place in the barn. I dont feel good about it but the sizzle couldnt even reach the hens . Not sure what to do with him. I will have to think that one through.

Sorry granny. I have not slept well for several days and brain is having trouble working at half speed.

Simple version: Hatchery EEs with pea combs are a better bet for getting blue or green eggs. (not 100%, though)

mrsc, I don't have good pictures of the combs on brooder chicks. Pea combs look wider than single combs.

7 week Welsummer with single comb

7 wk EE with pea comb. Looks wider.

I took 2 naps today, all day long. my ee has a big beard and those side things. she looks dirty with a little tan thrown in. I think i just dont like her. she is very flighty too.

just a reminder, spring forward, fall back, time to change your clocks and check them batteries in your smoke detectors.
