MRSC, i feel as i have let you down.

the 2 dead ones i have opened so i could possible save the 3rd. they were both turned on their side head to small end and a little bit of clear fluid came out as well. i dont know what that was. breeder said humidity was too high and they cant take that but he lets all his hens do the work so ? it was 60-65 % at lock down. the last egg, I piped it as well and found the same problem . head to small end. it however is alive at this moment. i opened an airway for it and put it back in the bator. i am keeping my fingers crossed i get at least one but again no high hopes. i have heard a couple chirps but its not active. if it does hatch what am i to do with one baby serama? the other 2 were so tiny and even dead they were beautiful. one was mottled and one pure white. I am going out side to fulfill a promise to my mom.

Sorry for your loss... Humidity at lockdown shouldn't be a problem if they were ready to be locked down. Is your incubator forced or still air? Still air temps need to be higher than bators with fans.

kathy it is a still air. the temps were very steady at 99.5 and that is what i have always used for the bantams. i havent had great hatches but they always hatched early. I may have put them on lock down a day early but i didnt increase humidity til the next day . was that yesterday? the clear liquid, could it have been from the body decomposing? I dont see it in the last one. I almost just lost it. was outside for a while and when i came back in its little beak had slipped back under the membrane. its not active at all. the blood vessels are very thin but not ready.

Just a few thoughts.

Room temp is very important. Fluctuations are not good. Room temp should be a steady 70-80*. A small heater in the room might help.

This is why placement of the incubator is important. High traffic areas of the house are not good. I keep a thermometer on the office wall. The thermostat is not a good indicator of room temp.

I've read that temperature should be a bit higher than the 99.5. 100 - 100.5 won't hurt.

My humidity rule is 35% to day 16, 55% to day 19, then 65% to hatch. I have a Genesis 1588.

I've hatched bantams with LF eggs with no problem. Shipped eggs are always iffy. The health of the egg is also important as well as the hen of course.

I have a friend who has an old 1602N Hovabator and she says she has good hatches. You just have to hit your groove of what works for you.

I'm sorry for your loss,

Rancher

thank you, sounds like some great tips there. the baby is still alive but not hatched yet. Grannys gone and done it !!! I have found a new baby hatched today, in town. i will go pick it up tomorrow . it is a blue silkie. lol there is a down side to this. I need professional help. I really do. While i was looking for a buddy for a chick that hasnt even hatched yet i met a woman . geez, i dont even want to tell it.

so she says, I have some, how many do you want ? i ask, what are they, how much, ect.... Might i say , at this point i havent found the silkie yet. so she says they are an inch tall and one to two weeks old. mixed bantam. now, i dont care what i put in there as long as it keeps the serama happy right? then she tells me she stuck them in a box because a cat was eating them. I know its getting very cold now and she has them n a box, no heat. then she tells me she will take a dollar. i say ok, she says there are 19 of them

Well now this is what I would do. Take them and find better homes for them. Many folks will take free chicks and IMO better that than with this kook. The thing with BYC is you can connect with other serious back yard chickeners like you.

I talk to everyone at the feed store about chickens and BYC. I think there should be a contest of the state with the most members. Start an Indiana Chicken lovers thread and see if you can beat us in NY.

I was once offer free chicks from a store and being that they were all pullets I took them. Called a friend who I thought would take them and gave them to her.

just a reminder,  spring forward, fall back, time to change your clocks and check them batteries in your smoke detectors.  :frow

OK granny now I'VE GONE N DONE IT! I ordered 10 serama eggs and 10 polish? Someone here said they heard there is special considerations needed for incubating these 2 breeds?? Advice? They will be here the 17th and are A type seramas and tolbunt polish?

now thats a great idea if i can keep them from my flock and turn them over fast because my flock is suspected MG. and i treat them once a month with denaguard for prevention. At the beginning of the yr. I had well over 100 bantams mostly but i needed surgery and had no one to care for them so they went in a neighbors pot because of the illness. I have tons of room for them but not sure i have the will power anymore. I cant see leaving them in a situation like that either but i am the last person that needs them. LOL you are from Indiana? we do have an Indiana site here. its under where am i where are you. tons of good people there. matter of fact someone just offered me a baby. LOL

oh Alisan. my very favorite 2 breeds in the world. you lucky, lucky girl. dont ask me about shipped eggs though. from my 9 seramas i have one maybe. I would encourage you to read all you can on shipped eggs. they are a whole new breed . mine were turned wrong and drown themselves when they tried to pip. and i had them upright in the turner right up to lock down. so my one peice of advise would be make some paper cups for lockdown and keep them upright.
