If I have hardware cloth on the top floor of the coop where air can come through, will that be enough venting or should I put a vent in the top of the coop too. I have a small one in the door.

Anyone?

I would play it by ear just keep an eye on the birds and check the inside of the roof and see if frost or ice or moisture is building up

My rooster lost his comb to frostbite last winter.
I had a little bit of frostbite on my Sicilian Buttercup roo's comb last winter, but that was because he was a pansy. Rehomed him this spring. Whenever a overhead threat happened my other roo warned everyone & the buttercup roo was the first in the coop. When everyone was out free ranging he hung at the coop. He really wasn't suit for our weather. He was the free rare breed bird from McMurrays Hatchery.

I saw pics of your setup, looked like you had NICE big raised coops. I know ZIP about wintering chickens. In Mi, we had carpeted boxes in the milk barn. That was it. It seems like a lot of work what ya'll do. I'm thinking out loud...if you added electrolytes (salt) to the water, that would lower the freezing point a few deg. Wonder if that would harm the chickens?

thanks ! I made one of them.

I took a pic of my office yesterday. I called it a "panorama of despair." It's so upsetting because there's no room to get anything done.
