Very sorry to hear about your problems Pam. Have you ever tried using the electric dog water bowls for the chickens? They come in a couple of sizes, but I like the 5 quart size or larger. They are around $20 at Tractor Supply or Rural King. Mine have lasted for 10 years. I just plug in 2 of them in the coop, and change the water each morning, then top them off at night. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/api-all45;seasons-electric-heated-pet-bowl-5-qt

Wish I was closer so I could help. Well, a more truthful version would be: wish you were closer so I could help. (It's not so cold here!)

Your son has helped you out of a pinch before. Give him the opportunity to rise to the occasion.

When my back is out, my son hears "I need your help" pretty often. He grumbles, but deep down I think he likes being needed. As long as it's not for more than 15 minutes or so.

Oh granny girl, you sure have had a black cloud following you around lately. I sure hope you didn't do any real damage to your elbow. I use the big blue heated dog dish with my 26 chickens. I have to fill it twice a day though. If you have lots of room just get a couple of them. It stinks when winter comes with watering. Plus every type of plastic waterer that I ever used leaked. I don't use metal because I add vinegar to my waterers. Thought I finally found the answer with a top fill waterer, but I couldn't tell you the number of times that I have went out to the coop and even though I have it sitting level on a block, it's overflowed all over the coop bedding Grrr. I only use that one in the summer. I sure wish we lived closer bcuz I would help you. Not certain if your supposed to use hydrogen peroxide on chickens but I did this summer when a roo ripped a big hunk of flesh off the back of one of my EE's. I squirted a small amount on a cotton swab & then dabbed it on her back. Then I put a big glob of antibiotic ointment on it, a gauze pad and wrapped it with that animal stretchy wrap. I didn't really think she would make it. By the next day she had the gauze pad pulled out from under the wrap, so I removed the wrap, applied more cream and kept her in a covered grow out pen for my baby chicks. She proceeded to crawl under the little coop & dust bathe. I knew I couldn't clean her up without doing more damage, so I left her that way. I did add one of her flock mates in with her so she wasn't lonely, by the following week she was greatly improved. Started letting her out with the rest of the flock minus the roos. As long as she kept it covered with dirt no one bothered it. She is still with me. I sure hope you can get your little guy patched up. The little bugger has been thru so much lately.

got the cookie tin water fixed not the other. just gave them more water. it will have to do until i can get something else. I also just used the antibiotic on the rooster. he is feeling so much better. terrible set back for him. I am going to move the phoenix after this guy heals up. he will be the main roo in that flock. My husband did come out with me and carried the water. poor guy. I hate to ask him to do anything and it shows too. he stood by the spiket for 5 min. before i came to check on him and said "I dont know how to do this". it is a quick disconnect. He held the rooster while i put the meds. on and i asked him if he stunk and he said he couldnt tell, the whole barn stinks. the ice mixed with rain has started and we are both wet. Just another one of those days i guess except i let this one get to me. Tom, was watching a movie with Chinese that was all sub-titles, he is illiterate. I fussed so he found something different . an Arnold Sw movie, in Spanish. He has done this since he had his stroke in 98 . I think he knows every thing that goes on in them.

Lady, it seems like i have my fair share of troubles. is everyone like this or me ? It has been this way for so long i dont know a different way. I think the rooster will be ok but it really makes me mad. at the other rooster , at myself. they had been together for a while no problems but its not like i hadnt heard of this thing happening before. I hear of it often, just not mine. I want him gone.

Do the waterers with nipples freeze up? I have a 5 gallon bucket with four nipples. Fills from the top, so all I have to do is pop out the plug and put the hose in. I've seen the Chicken Chick talking about the fountains. Just looks like PVC pipe and nipples, to me. She wraps hers in insulation to keep it from freezing. You might could find PVC scraps through your bst sites, or maybe a hardware store? TSC has the nipples pretty cheap.

Granny, please call me Lisa, it would make me mad as He** too. I probably would have cut his head off, so he's lucky that he isn't in my flock, lol. I am so very sorry about the black cloud that's been following you for so long. You have enough with your own health issues but having a spouse & a adult son having them as well is just not fair. My loving grandma always said "what doesn't kill ya, makes you stronger" I think my grandma would have loved you :) My prayers are with you & your family. Just wish there was a way for making life a little easier for you.

yes, that would freeze i am sure. I could drop a heater in the bucket but wonder if the nipples wouldnt just freeze any way.

Granny, I used a submersible bucket heater, looked like a thick hockey puck. It rested on the bottom of the bucket and kept the nipples thawed.

Unfortunately what happened in my messy chickens dropped water every time they drank and it froze into an icy mound under the bucket.

Still haven't found a carefree solution, but that one might get you by.
