After the first couple of days momma will probably want to take them out in the run with her. They like to teach them to scratch & dust bathe asap. Plus momma is really needing to be able to do that after sitting on the eggs so long. Don't be surprised if momma looks rough for a while. They go thru a little molt after hatching. My little Silkie momma is still a little rough around the edges & hers turned 8 wks this past thursday. It will be weeks before she is laying again.

Thanks Lisa. She looks dirty now. Not from poop, her feathers just looks dirty. Guess they don't have much time to clean much though sitting on eggs. Hope she don't loose a bunch of feathers. Then I'll worry she can't keep the chicks warm enough.

She will be just fine, mine didn't lose a whole bunch of feathers just some finer one. Her feathers look more like they are tired, which they are. It takes so much protein to keep her going for 21 days that there isn't any to go to the feather maintenance.

You've did a great job of hands off recently Red & that's good. These next few days are critical. If you moved her food & water out a bit so she wouldn't poop in the nest. Don't get worried if she doesn't get up anymore. She is in the home stretch. She will be concentrating on getting the temp & humidity just perfect & you don't want to disturb her at this time. I am Sooo.... excited for you Red. Broody hatching is so much fun

That's for sure Mutt, but we want it to be the right home too. Too many people at this time of year get puppy's as gift for Christmas & all to often they find out the puppy keeps giving & giving. And not always nice non-stinking presents at that. They get overwhelmed & get rid of the animal. Animals are a huge commitment that not all people think thru.

I can't wait. I'd love to see one hatch but I know that I probably won't get to. Probably not Red because momma keeps things very close while chicks are hatching. Once in a while you'll get a Red or Twist that start cutting up the first day they're born. They'll peek their little head out for a moment before momma pushes them back under. Or like this little day old of mine jail breaked out from under momma.

Has anyone noticed that it has been awhile since I've made the top ten for biggest mouth? Twist and granny are still making us proud along with chicken lady though.
