I am still looking for my "perfect" breed. Harder for me as I hate red chickens LOL started with Brahmas. I love them other then they aren't very cost effective. I will always have some but not my "go to breed" I will also have a few easter eggers . I like that australorps but they are a real pain to pluck clean. Great egg layers tho.

What are the characteristics you need (besides not red, lol) - from this it looks like good layers, dual purpose for meat, cold hardy? Have you tried one of the varieties of sussex?

You are joking about store bought eggs being sprayed white aren't you?

Leghorns are great layers. Great feed conversion, they do well in SC winters. I have owned a lot of them, both brown and white. Mine have not been mean to other hens and have not been as flighty as people report them to be.

X2. Great layers.

no I haven't tried the Sussex and I can even spell that breed always a plus. I will have to check them out. I don't want a breed that looks like a pheasant because of the springers (hunting breed) Must lay large or bigger eggs, feed efficient for the most part, Pretty (maybe) decent eating and cleaning roos for the extra ones.

No maam

The eggs in a commercial system are washed, sprayed with sanitizing product and dried -- while that may impact the coloration I am not aware of specific coloring being applied.
