I had chicken biology and life cycle lessons with a few of the 20-somethings tonight. We played with the new hatches then went out to check on the juvies and lock up the adults. There were a few eggs so we candled in the backyard, then took them in and cracked to check for fertility. Then we candled the bator eggs. A few pips, a few internal pips, and a few late deaths. One had pipped the shell but not the membrane. It was pip-side down, so not sure if it started there or was rolled. I eggtopsied it for them: no veins, yolk absorbed and everything. Hate to see that happen. They asked what I was going to do with it, and horrified when I tossed it over the fence. ;)

Up to 30, now. Hoping for about 5 more, though it still wouldn't give me a great hatch rate. I need a hatcher, I think. Or a dryer. Because the chicks push the eggs to the sides, and they get cold. Maybe I could just put up a wall and move the hatchlings over the wall to dry, then to the brooder when they're fluffy. There are options. I'm not loading the bator again til late June, so I've got some time to think.

People at work are horrified when I tell them I feed chicks that don't hatch to my pet snake. Most of them won't come to visit because of my snake. Oh, well, [IMG]

I read about a member on this site who fed weak/crippled chicks to her muskovies.

It's good to use them if you're able. I have a few in the freezer, in case a biology teacher ever needs them.

Update on grandson, the ER sent him home with Benedryl for his symptoms. They were pretty sure this was a reaction to his Amoxicillin. I haven't heard from my daughter this morning.

Just assisted the 33rd chick. It was getting glued. Might should've waited, I think. Or done it sooner? It can't seem to straighten its neck out, and its navel doesn't look closed yet. It's hard to know what to do. It had been pipped since yesterday evening.

glad to see u back Enola, what a beautiful baby !!!! I am glad my ovaries dont hurt anymore. of course i dont have any .. LOL And all these baby chicks !! We are going to make sure there is no shortage of eggs for America !! Reminds me of the stories my mother told of the depression. Government bought their eggs but they were forced to sell them. they also grew hemp for them. they burned the stalks and kept the seeds. I / We had a horrid scare yesterday. we almost lost the baby. If not for the fast legs of daddy. He was out playing with brothers and decided he would "go for a walk". My daughter seen him on the road and screamed for SIL. He FLEW up there. I live on top of a hill and cars fly . you cant see my driveway. Anyway he got to baby just as car came flying up the road. seconds had not passed before he had grabbed baby and the car was there. baby is fine except for a sore @ss. SIL has bruised feet from running on gravel. We all cried . dad hasnt left his side since yesterday. My poor Tom was screaming at the children today to the point i had to take him out to town. Baby was climbing on chair and he was panicking that he would fall, ect...

    I don't get it.

So glad to hear the baby is ok. I get so sick just thinking about all these close calls. And those things that pass around Facebook that say "repost if you rode in the back of a truck and survived!"

I understand that some older generations think we're soft, but every time I see those posts I want to just scream "But what about those who didn't?!"

Anyway, so glad it all is ok now.
