Quote: These were kids that ran afoul of the law and were facing 5 years in CYA (California Youth Authority) or 18 months in treatment. Crimes were various, most not too serious, some pretty bad. All kids were substance abusers, all were classified SED (Serious Emotional Disturbance). They came from all over the state, as you would not want former crime partners in treatment together. Also, this was a hands off, complete compliance program. The kids agree to follow the rules, and they would be returned to CYA if they fought or walked out, or were noncompliant in other ways (like refusing to work toward high school diploma), so I felt fairly safe most of the time. Most dangerous part was getting to work in a bad part of San Francisco, avoiding the crack heads and aggressive prostitutes who didn't want other women walking through their territory. 180º from how I grew up and anything that ever happened in my straight and narrow life!!
Anyway, I was there as a school teacher and not part of their therapy or treatment. But what an education I got. They'd tell me so-and-so will hurt herself if she has a chance. Okay, I think, we're good, no dissections or chemical labs. Nooo, caught her carving on her arm with a staple she found on the floor. Oy. We tried to focus on the future, give them some skills they could use, hope of a job. A few of them should have made it I think, but others were just putting in the time, you could tell.
