as far as broodies the brahma's aren't overly so. I do have a "maternity" ward for the broodies and each one get's her own kennel or small dog house.

LOL no breeder's or any real type of chickens out here. I have looked seriously at the legbars but again they are all over the place as far as cost's and what not with the various hatcheries.

Mine seem to handle the heat just fine. and should you happen to have a puddle or two even better.

We can make some puddles! I have a huge grapefruit tree that gives total shade in the summer, branches almost to the ground. I water under it on hot days, and it keeps the temp about 10 degrees cooler. Better, but not great on those 100 degree days.

It might depend on your source. Hatchery Orp has no broody instinct. Orps from a breeder went broody as soon as they started laying. Hatchery EE is never broody. Breeder Ameraucanas, 2-3 times every year.

Legbars are not meaty chickens by any means. But, for production of good sized eggs and feed conversion rates, only leghorns are better. The chicks are sexable at hatch. Which I find to be very convenient.......
