Red, they are so nasty looking. Their belly's are dragging on the ground. Feathers all rubbed off on their underside. It might be different if they freeranged a bit, but just kept in a coop all the time is a disgusting process.
Guess I didn't think of it that way. You wouldn't want to free range to keep the weight on I'd think? And my chickens do get out about everyday. Do they eat a certain diet too?
High protein feed & lots of it. We butchered at 8 weeks old. Hens were 5-6# & roo's 8-10 #'s. Can't even fathom how they can get that big so fast. You do have to take their feed up for night or they will eat themselves to death, no joking

I didnt feed them as high a protein as recommended , they went fer longer

Some says feed em 24 hrs until you see the first sign of splay leg, then do the 12 on/off schedule

Wow y'all must have plenty of chicken now. How much do you think it saves per year?


Times two on the question... They are 5 bucks a chick here then you have to feed them.. So didn't make sense to me.
You don't really save money, they are like having chickens for eggs. You do it because they taste better than the store bought birds & you know how they're living before you eat them.
