I have a flock of yearlings, consistant layers. Last week one of them laid an egg with a shell that never hardened. Was all I could do to remove it from the nest w/o breaking it. Next day I got one with a shell so soft that DW stuck her thumb through it. Normal eggs since. Both conditions have occurred before. I don't think calcium deficiency is the problem; I've had a tub of oyster shell under the coop for 2+ weeks. Maybe heat-related, maybe not.
@casportponyTums is for egg bound but it kinda makes sense to me if they have a shell less egg that its lacking. Its worth a shot and shouldnt hurt anything. I think sometimes its from cancer too. who knows without looking inside ? Havent heard from Kathy in a long while...
