You still have to feel for the lump if you can't see it. The bird will be fine, rest assured. Better to get them habituated to harmless handling than have the first time you need to hold them be during an emergency.

Have you ever dangled your hand in their cage with treats in it/around it? Not a bad idea to get them to come around to the idea that hand = food bringer. My only hand-tame quails were handled from the moment they hatched, but they tend to be more feral the less you physically interact with them.

They all eat out of my hand every few days. Only one of them likes being picked up. The others don't even let me.
