That is basically what I was thinking of in post #6, with the youtube "flowerpot" water heater! The one I have built uses a single square cinder block and has a glazed flowerpot saucer on top of it for the waterer to sit on. I admit, I am still thinking through the question of how to tell when the light bulb has burned out. I'll get back to you when (if) I figure that one out!

Walmart sells empty cookie tins.

Any of your goodwill stores, resale shops places like hat sell them really cheap too. I can find them for like a 50cents to a 1.00. Sometimes a little more but not much. Ask on your free cycle in your area for empty round cookie tins. I am sure someone has some laying around.

I have heard of some using the heating mats for fish tanks, or even for green houses. Your plants sit on them to keep from freezing. Why not old water bed heaters? I know they keep your water pretty warm. Your water bowls would just sit on top of it.

I live in MN and use a heated dog dish, available for about $10.00 at Menards, a local home improvement store. I'm sure Lowes, Fleet Farm, etc. have the same product. It has a thermostat that shuts it off when the temps are above freezing. I take two buckets out, one with fresh water and an empty to carry supplies and to dump yesterdays water into .

And they don't get up on top of the bowl & turn it over? Or stand on top of it & poop in it? What happens if the bowl gets empty about it heating?

Oh, & why do you dump yesterday's water into a bucket? What do you do with it then? Water plants? When I'm out there filling up waterers, I just pour the water out on the ground. I guess I'm wasting it & it could have another use.

I dump the dirty water on the ground in summer, fall and spring. But in the winter we would have an ice rink after dumping the water every day

I had a friend who used part of a waterbed heater...the old ones you placed under the mattress....it shorted out and started a fire, burned the entire coop down and killed all the chickens...

be careful what you buy, good will etc sounds good, but make sure you are very sure of what you are placing in a coop filled with shavings!

No they don't tip it over. It is made for dogs and is very stable. They have on occasion pooped in it a little, but I dump it out and wipe with a paper towel every day. I only have eight chickens so they do not drink it dry nor does it evaporate very much in 24 hours.
