Green thumb is itching, anyone else?

I have had cutting celery in my herb garden for a # of years now. It's basically cut and come again plant. I use it in soups and my husband uses it in tuna salad. Have trid reg. celery with out much luck.

I doubt I actually ever do celery of any kind, it isn't my favorite veggie by any means, and it would be a huge struggle here through our insane summers.

"Learning how to grow celery is simple. The main features this crop requires are rich soil, plenty of water, and protection from hot sun and high temperatures. Grow celery as a winter crop in the South, a summer crop in the far North, and a fall crop in most other areas."

hope this helps

Cutting celery is very strong flavored. It's good for flavoring soups and such. Not much for eating a la storebought celery.

I want some celeriac, but I sure don't know if that stuff will grow here. *sigh* I am still learning what will and will not grow in the Alabama heat. Grated celeriac with some dressing is actually a fantastic sandwich spread... Ate it all the time in Holland

And cut up in soups and stews. Especially split pea soup.

If I lived in AL, I have no doubt it has a year round growing season. Your cool weather crops such a lettuce and kale and spinach and cabbage you'd just grow in the early spring, fall and winter.

From what I've read I would expect home grown crops to have better and stronger flavor than commercial counterparts.

Just as with other hybrid things, there is a trade off between production and flavor. IMO. Certainly a hybrid tomato may produce more fruit it may not produce as flavorful a fruit as a heritage. Certainly the Strawberry is a good example of this.

Yeah, I am learning that I can grow stuff year round. It's amazing! In Holland there's several months that you can harvest what's left on the land, but can't plant anything new due to the frozen soil. Under glass and in a green house you can extend the season somewhat, but it's pretty unpleasant being out in the cold rain.

I will become a Southern woman yet

(hey, I made my first dinner of collards, butter beans and corn bread a week ago. It was pretty good too LOL. Never had a collard in my life until that point.)

Is Cutting Celery like Lovage?

I'd say it is similar. I grow lovage in my perennial garden for both eating and for the great flower in late summer. It is really beautiful.if I could figure out how to get pictures on here from my iPad I'd post them.it's a blonde thing.

Looks like more rain for us this weekend:/ I need to do some yard work. I have so much to do and not enough time on weekends to do it. Especially when it is raining on the weekends. Everything around here is still saturated.

I have magazine with Celery recipes and of course how to grow it and all that. I plan to try it this year. They say the red type of celery is best but seed is hard to find. I will have to look around and see if I can find any.

Has anyone started seeds yet. I received an e-mail from Johnny's it's time to start tomato plants. I missed ordering from Burpees $2.00 shipping offer. I'm hoping it will come again.
