I have an indoor cat that is a monster shedder. I’m going to get deshedding shampoo and conditioner. I don’t necessarily have any hopes that it will really help with her shedding less, but my goal is to get as much dead hair of as possible during the baths. I’ve seen before to bathe (it was talking about dogs) them every six weeks. That seems way too often to bathe my cat. How often do you think is good? I want to do it often enough to help keep the hair down but not too often that it will bother her skin or my sanity. If she could, she would shred me during baths. I know you @oldhenlikesdogs were a groomer, so I was hoping you might know how often would be good. Thanks!!!

I didn't groom many cats except to shave them down. I would bathe them as necessary. Sorry I mostly did dogs, so my experiences with cat grooming is limited, and I had no training on them.

Thanks for the reply! Well, what would you say about a dog? I know it depends on the coat, but generally how often would you bathe a dog?

I only bathe as necessary. I've seen some people recommend as often as every 2 weeks, but that can sometimes strip the natural oils out of a coat. It can also depend on breed, and use of the dog.

Average recommendations are ever 8-12 weeks, and if it's a breed that requires clipping than bathing during the groom is recommended.

I personally only bathe when necessary. If they feel too greasy, or have an odor. I also bathe more during the shedding cycle to hasten the removal of hair. Generally every 4-6 weeks for a month or two.

Different coat types have different needs. Some are great at repelling dirt, and some are waterproof. I don't think there's a one size fits all answer.

Thank you! Wow, every two weeks seems way too often. Thank you for your response! I think I’ll bathe her and then just see what happens. I can decide as I go when she needs another bath. Last question😂 Are there any big indicators to look out for to tell if I’m bathing her too often? Like obvious signs of dry or irritated skin.

They can get dry and itchy, and also they can actually get more greasy and dirty because it strips off the protective oil of a coat, so it loses the ability to repel dirt.

I used to do mine every 4-8 weeks, but now only do them a couple times a year. Most of mine are short coated, so I often wipe them down with a damp washcloth, and they are good to go. The Aussie gets a bath probably 3-4 times a year at most.

Generally they end up get a full bath because they decided to roll in something stinky.
