Grooming Thread!!!!!!

Hi Everyone, I have'nt read past page 5 yet but I have a question for poodle owners. I have a standard black male, last time I took him to the groomers I checked inside his ears while still there and was told they no longer pull the hair from them because they need the hair for filtering. Does anyone know if this is a new thing because I thought it was always done. ? thanks

When I was grooming it was back and forth on what should be done. I've seen ears matted shut and was always for plucking them clean. You should ask you vet what they recommend. If you decide to pluck them make sure you get an appropriate powder which helps with the process. Personally I think light plucking weekly is the way to go with poodles since they seem prone to ear infections. You cannot properly clean them out with hair matted inside them. It of course all depends on your dogs tolerance for the process. Most shouldn't even feel it, especially if it's been done before.

That makes sense because Dorie has almost no oil and Luna has a low oil coat and both have upright ears so they don't need ear cleaning often.

Boston's are so clean. My bulldog Boston mixes too. Hardly any shedding ever and they always feel nice. They are made for cuddling.

Yesss! I can't get enough of Dorie's short, soft, non-oily, low-shedding, and odorless coat. It's a shame she doesn't love petting..

Thank you, this groomer pulled his ear hair out just a couple months back but now says that they don’t do it anymore. Yes I’ll have to ask our vet what she recommends. This poodle has been going to a groomer all his life, he’s almost eleven years old now so I know he puts up with it and behaves well while being groomed. I’m not sure if I could do it myself though. And I’d rather not do it, that’s what they are paid to do. And I tip the groomer well. Poodles are smart dogs but are high maintenance, I took him in when my sister died, we love him but I wouldn’t get another one. His hair appointments are way way more expensive than mine,

I think what sometimes happens is groomers get blamed for an ear infection that occurs after a recent grooming, and than the policy for the shop changes to no plucking. The debate has been going on for a long while with no proof on either side whether it's beneficial or detrimental.

I'm sorry they will no longer pluck them for you, especially since he's always had it done. I have always been pro-ear plucking just because what I have seen when it isn't done. Some dogs will just grow a bit and that's it, and others will end up with greasy mat clumps in their ears. I can't imagine that's healthy. Perhaps your vet is willing to do it.

I've been debating getting another poodle but all the grooming is keeping me from deciding it's a good idea. My current dogs are fairly easy to keep clean, and only require baths a few times a year. I have grown lazy. I just do teeth brushing every other day, and nail clipping every 2 weeks. The aussie gets a bath and blow out a couple times a year and her pants trimmed up. I can groom a poodle, but I'm not sure if I want to.

Shorty would have us carrying her around like a princess. She love contact and has separation anxiety. She's a Velcro dog.
