Growing Fodder

Just an FYI, I don't think mine grows very fast. I really should pay a little more attention to it.
I do only water 2 times a day, fill the top with 2 quarts water and let it drip down. If my sink sprayer worked I would just spray all the bins to make it easier and make sure they all get wet.

My holes are not enough and it does take a while to drain.

Also, then hens are not eating it all, they are eating all the seeds so I keep telling myself to feed just as they sprout.......but forget :p

So far I'm happy with my setup. Just to recap it goes like this... at 6pm when I get my glass of wine the container with 1/2 cup of wheat seeds is sitting next to my glass so I'll never forget to add water to start a batch. The next morning as I'm sipping on my coffee I dump the seeds into a perforated container. I used some smaller ones for day 1 and 2. On day 3 the seeds go to the larger flats.

I have a thermostat controlled oil filled heater in the bathroom and keep the temperature ~70°F. Makes it cozy for the crickets too.

The watering system mists the whole shebang for 2 minutes every 4 hours. Makes it easy for me.

That sound awesome, love the automation. I just have one question. White or red? ;)

I am trying something to save water.

I have a spray bottle. I have been spraying the seeds morning/night (2x a day). About 12 squirts in each try. So far for the last 4 days it is working out nice. They still have a little moisture by the next spraying.
They do not get much direct light but near a south facing window, near the wall heater.

Will let you know how this works.

i am hoping that this is a better water saver. Seemed like such a waste before. And my hens are not overly thrilled with the grass ( ) anyway

I tried to make the kitchen bigger but wife said no it's big enough when I was designing the house. Even when I was building the house I kept thinking dang it's too small and sure enough very little counter space was the result of not adding 2' on to the size of the house.

I hear you! I added 1600 sq ft to our 800 sq ft house 10 years ago, my kitchen is fine but I wish I would have made the bedrooms bigger, another 2 feet.... I have never built anything then later complained it was too big! Bigger is better.

Hi just found this thread. This is my second year growing fodder it's been working great cutting my feed bill in half and the eggs are excellent. I'm growing mine in 10"X20" flats top flat has holes for drainage then I set it in the bottom flat with 5 canning jar rings to hold it up works well. I soak grains overnight 2 cups black oil sunflower seeds, 1 1/2 cups wheat, 1/2 cup mung beans and 1/2 cup lentils water twice a day with sprayer on sink and harvest at 11 days. I cut it all up so there is no crop problems.

But how much are you spending on the seeds for sprouting?

Around here wheat feed is $10 for 50 pounds and BOSS is $20 for 50 pounds. I wonder about the different germination rates for different seeds... I've been going 8 days with wheat alone.

They just tear it up until nothing is left. I'm just so glad I could provide some greens this time of year with so little work.
