GSD lovers - what's your favorite coat color?

Grit your pup looks more like a black and tan than a bicolor to me. Bi-color's I have seen as pups don't have tan on their face until later.

That's what I thought, but the breeder is pretty certain he's going to be a bi-color. His undercoat is black. It doesn't matter to me, since I didn't choose him based on color. It's going to be interesting to see how he turns out.

You will flat just see more problems with shy and skittish temperaments and sound sensitivity with the whites. I've been in shepherds 30 years and that's just the way it went. They were kept mostly by pet people for their rarity and bred without an eye to working ability, working temperament and stability, than the well bred normal colored shepherds. Without a goal other than color you lose temperament quickly. And they did. There are some great whites, they're hard to find.

There are so few good breeders in TN that I won't even consider rescuing a GSD in the shelter since I moved here. Wow awful. I switched to rescuing LGDs at least they have a "working" temperament goal. I've temperament checked every shepherd I've seen in a local shelter, and I'm there a lot. Haven't brought one home in six years.

Well bred or not at all for my future. Besides I prefer Czech/DDR dogs. They're rare as hens teeth out here.

No, that is not true unless they're also being bred with eye issues. Due to Pano many good breeders now do CERF their dogs as well as OFA for hips and elbows.

Good breeding is good breeding.

Bad breeders in any color in any breed, who only breed pets with regard to color and not health, longevity, type and temperament are just bad breeders.

I've known great shepherds in EVERY color. Whites, a self-blue, a solid liver, some of those washed out black and creams and black and silvers and all the other more approved colors. Whether the breeder gave a darn and knew what they were doing mattered a heck of a lot more than what color it was.

Speaking of indescriminant breeding....

Our white GSD is the result of an on-purpose 'accidental' breeding by my POS stepbrother.. They happened into a female white GSD somehow and, wouldn't ya know, they later "found" a male white GSD.. Just walking the road.

Yeah right.

There's not a doubt in my mind that the male was hotter than the hinges on hell's gate. That's just the kind of people they are, to steal somebody's dog..

So anyway, oops!...they bred. Wasn't intentional of course... :rolleyes

The male ended up getting shot after my POS stepbrother was warned several times that he was killing a neighbor's animals.. Oh well...he'd done his job, right? So then, just before the female has her pups, they give her to my mom to watch "for a while" for some reason.. Read that: they gave her to my mom to deal with caring for the imminent delivery and subsequent PITA of raising pups.

So the dog has the pups -- a whole gob of them -- and my mom almost immediately hurts her knee. Next thing ya know, my wife and I have a litter of white GSD pups to find homes for.. We did the shots.. We did the worming.. We put out the ad.. We screened the potential adoptees.. And, yeah, we asked for payment because hey...worming, vax, vets, and shots are expensive, not to mention the fact that we believe all animals to have value and shouldn't simply be given away. People are much more likely to care for something if they paid for it.. In the end, we broke even...barely...not counting time, energy, etc.

The plan had originally been to find them ALL homes, but then we discovered that one had some...issues. Turns out, she has megaesophagus. Naturally, we kept her instead of putting her down or shuffling her off to some unsuspecting buyer.

In the end, we're glad we did.. Like I said about her earlier...sweetest dog ever. Super smart, too.. A joy to have around, aside from having to grind dry food and mix with water to make gruel...3x/day inclined feedings...burping her like a baby...etc. It's a pain, but she really is worth it.

Oh, and would you believe that my POS stepbrother actually called my mom up one day and asked for my number, because he felt like he was entitled to half of what we collected for the litter? She told him to take a hike..

I haven't seen him in a number of years, but I'll run across him sooner or later.. When I do, I think I might have to punch him right in the face.

Bless your heart. I have a friend who has a MegaE gal. After years and years of dealing with a tube they gave in to her when she pulled it this last time. Amazingly she is thriving! Another friend on the forum has a MegaE boy and those first puppy pictures in his seat just made you melt. So glad you have given her a chance at life.

Thank you, GREAT BREED to work with!! I train periodically with our local Head K-9 here in INDY. Yertle and Frisbie do the job. Frisbie barked consecutively for 7 mins in a bark and hold drill before she got her grip. Loads of fun to play with.
