In the process of getting a 1952 savage model 88 in .300 savage.
It's probably 90%. Should officially be mine in about a month.

Got plenty of hardware in both long guns and pistols. My favorite deer rifle is a Thompson Center contender pro hunter in 7mm08.
Favorite CCW is a S&W Shield .40 cal. in a galco king tux ITW holster.

got a ruger american rim-fire bolt action in .22 mag, for hunting small game about a month or so ago, really nice gun.

it was between .223 or a .22 mag went with the mag (as deer hunting was illegal with a .223) just found out they changed the laws this year and .223 is now legal on mule, white tail, wolf and pronghorn for big game, (they still recommend you use a bigger round on moose, bear and elk)

I have a .22 mag Ruger m77 composite from the mid '80's. Rifle will shoot sub 1min groups at 100 yrds. I have it's big brother a M77 in .270 that is equally impressive.

I did pick up a .17 HMR that I can't believe can match if not beat the .22 mag. I'm getting older, and can't really tell if one is better than the other....

In my opinion, the .223 is mildly adquate for thin skin game like whitetail deer. And only if the shooter knows what he's/she is doing.

No way would I recommend that caliber for elk. It's a predator, varmint cartridge at best. Mildly adquate for deer.

I agree with mowin. They're varmit guns. I'd go with something larger for deer, otherwise you're just hurting deer, and will spend lots of time tracking down blood trails, to see if/where it died.

I've taken deer with a .223. even a couple with my .22-250. if you hit them correctly, they won't go far. But if your a little off, or clip the shoulder your not going to find that deer. I know a old-timer that has hunted with a .222 for yrs. Takes several deer every yr without a loss. He knows that gun and is confident in it. So, yes they may be legal for deer, even adquate, but there's better choices. Don't live in a elk state, so can't comment if a .223 is legal or not, but I'd be surprised if they are. I definitely wouldn't use one on elk.

I shoot for accuracy, never have been hunting but I do love to shoot.
