I have been looking at the 38/357....very envious of your rifle. The 17 hmr is a sweet little round.

For our needs with the varmits and cost of use, the .223 to me is the best all around caliber. If you've ever seen what if does to flesh, there is no doubt what it will do on a coyote. The bullet is designed to hit and tumble and stay in the body. And as has been said it is a very accurate round out to 500 yards. I have the AR but if I had my choice I would perfer a counter sniper rifle. It's bolt action and just as smooth a rifle as you could ask for. And it is so low on recoil you could shoot it all day.

For my money it cannot be beat. But then if you are after bear get a custom built .300 mag. Good to 1000 yards. But who's huntin bear, right? The OP asked for a coyote gun.

Use a 22-250 or AR15 225 caliber problem with shotgun is lack of range. Rifles that with synthetic stocks and purchase a 3-9 x 40 scope and zero it for 50 to 100 yards depending on how close the animals are getting. And add a bipod to help you hold the weapon steady.

Ive got the Marlin .357 Mag./.38 Spl lever gun. It is very nice. It will take care of a coyote out as far as you can shoot, easily out to 150 yards.
Other rounds will shoot flatter and faster, but that .35 caliber slug packs a real knock down punch way out there. Its not too hard on pelts, either, and tends to not blow up on marginal shots.
The fact that about a gazillion revolvers are also chambered for the round(s) makes it an attractive 1-2 combination. It might also be noted that gun-grabbing politicians aren't too interested in "cowboy guns and John Wayne rifles," either. The same round in a rifle and revolver? Awesome.

And in a pinch, these two can be very effective against 2-legged coyotes, too.

A .22 magnum and use solid bullets make head shots it kills them cleanly marlin make a nice one pretty economical as well a .22 hornet is another good one but a little harder to find I use gunbroker.com a fair amount

the heavier a gun, typically... the less recoil... but of course that depends on ammo load.

for some reason, most people tend to like pea shooters and light guns... but those things have very little actual knockdown power

Good advice here; the 17 HMR is like a death ray at close (under 100 yards) range. The bullet is very frangible and richochets are rare. No recoil and easy for novices to shoot. Inherently accurate. Get a lightweight scoped rifle and you're in business.

I just got a possum at about 20 yards, dead as a door nail. Its a mossberg 151k .22 lr....older gun but holds 15 rounds, says semi auto but u can shoot the rounds as fast as full auto!!! easy to load and handle, trigger not to sticky and I used a regular bulk federal hollow point. I was at the range today shooting it at a hundred yards and the hubby was amazed with it's accuracy at that distance. Use it was 139.00 at Cabellas and about 16 bucks for 525pcs. bulk hollow points.,,,,but get a decent scope!
