I am new to having ducks. I have a pair (not sure if they are male or female yet). My question is if I do have a male and female will they start hatching young? I'm not sure if I read right if they do or don't sit on their eggs? If I take him inside will they still hatch? Not really looking to have babies lol.

Goal here is not to have more ducks just enjoy the eggs and two that I have (if I get at least one girl).

Thanks!

If you have a pair, then the eggs would be fertile. Whether or not the female would hatch them depends a lot on her breed. Some breeds don't go broody.

And if it turns out she is a broody breed, just take the eggs every day when they're laid. She can't hatch them if she doesn't have them.

Depends what breed you have really, I think some have more broody tendencies than others.
Take him inside? or was that a typo for them, as in the eggs inside?
If either of them start laying, which sounds like it won't be for a while if they are too young to sex, then just collect the eggs daily and you should be fine :)

Thanks so much! Sorry when I said "take them inside" like so she can't sit on them. I have Indian Runner Ducks.
Thank you for the advice! : )

They seem to be one of the breeds that do go broody, so you would need to separate her from the eggs - and probably easiest and less smelly/messy to just take the eggs inside and leave the ducks outside!
Ducks lay a bit later in the day (or really late if they're anything like mine) and also like to hide their nests so if one or both is female then it might be easier if you leave them in their coop until later so they lay inside, particularly if they free-range at all.

And please do feel free to post some pictures! ;)
