Half Shell Hatch-A-Long! (Caution, unsuccessful, please read whole thread before attempting)

If you haven't found this before it gives very detailed instructions of the experiment in Japan.

They wiped down the eggs with 70% ethanol before cracking them, which is something you could do before you open yours, and they kept the humidity at 80% for the duration of incubation.

This is fantastic!!! I had searched for a thorough guide to what was done. This is the best I've seen! Thank you for sharing!

Well, my shell-less experiment is a “failure to launch” unfortunately. My incubator fan is apparently a bit too forceful. Darn janoels... dried my poor little embryo right out, even with a cover and some sterile water to help maintain the moisture in there. :( I guess I need a still air to do this kind of thing. Or find some way to cut the fan...

Bummer, I'm sorry it didn't work! It would make sense that a still air would be preferable in this situation. I've even wondered about those reptile incubators before. They look like they belong in a lab but they're like tiny cabinet incubators. Lol

Aw, that's too bad. I hope that doesn't happen with my NR. @CluckNDoodle is there a way to block the fan kinda? Like make a little shield type thing for my eggs? I'm sorry Trisseh.

I was thinking that the ones in those studies are probably incubated in the cabinet type incubators that are used to grow bacterial culture plates. Those don’t have a circulating fan, at least not the same as in the forced air incubators. We might be getting one at the clinic at some point though, so if we do, I might have to slip an egg in there to try. xD haha.
Good news is all 3 jaerhon eggs are developing. :) I might tinker later and see if I can either slow or stop the fan, if I have time to give it another go, with no other eggs in there. 👍

Yeah, I think they are too. Ooh, that would be fun! What would you need one for at your clinic? Just curious. It would probably work better in those. How long did your baby live for? That's exciting about the Jaerhon eggs! Hopefully they all hatch too!

@MGG we’ve been looking into doing mastitis cultures in house instead of sending them to the lab. The TAT is ridiculous, I sent a sample last Tuesday and we still don’t have results for it🙄 so the boss was trying to come up with ways to get earlier results so we can start treating those cows earlier with appropriate drug choices. :)
My little speck only lasted a day. :( I was thinking of trying one more at around day 7, and adding sterile water on top of it too, once it’s in the container. That may help buffer it from the drying effects of the fan... 🤔

the jaerhons have me super excited though! All 3 have nice veins starting, although they were hard to see at first since I have to incubate them upright (terrible air cells on those).
