And, last night, this morning...close enough. Whatcha naming the baby?

Well I really don't no what to do here. My chicks were also due Halloween,
actually I think it was the day before, I set them on the 9th at about 6 in the evening. 2 came out on Halloween and nothing
from the others. Then this morning very early one has a pip but it is now 7 and it has done nothing else. it is just chirping a lot. Do I go in and help or still wait?

In the spring or summer and humid, I would say no, let him keep working on it. But I had three die like that in the last two weeks. It's still up to you, though. Two of the chicks I helped (one had zipped but was not able to push the top off for the membrane and the other was just pipped for a very long time) didn't make it. Others have.

If you do decided to help, use the directions I gave on the bottom of page 100, including the egg carton. If the egg is on its side, the chick may be able to crawl out too soon. Essentially, what you are doing for the chick is removing a too dry membrane and getting the poor thing more air. What you want to avoid is physically pulling the chick away from the small end of the egg, since that's where he is connected with his umbilical. You want to make it so that he can rest and then pull himself away from the shell when he's ready.

Thanks, I did read the post on page 100. I am also wondering what to do about the other eggs. Shoud I try poking a small hole in the large end or just leave them alone do ya think? I have heard that silkies need a lot of help sometimes but i just don't no.

I never pip an egg for the chick, though I have done several ill conceived rescue attempts on unhatched eggs. If you want to try chipping the egg at the air cell, I can tell you that you probably have nothing to lose if it really is day 23. I will warn that every time I have ever done that, I have seen a chick that was beyond my help. But there is always hope.

The same thing just happened to me with silkies.
One had pipped and zipped all the way around and didn't make it.
I was at the vet's with my Sibe having a C-Section and wasn't here to help it.
I heard the other egg chirp and there was a pip the next morning so I decided to check on it. I am so glad I did. It was shrink wrapped and wouldn't have made it if I hadn't helped it. I finished pipping it with tweezers and wet the membrane with warm water and put it back in the incubator. It is alive and well running around the brooder now.

well I hope I did the right thing by zipping it for him/her. I did a fast candle
on the other eggs and i really don't no what i should be seeing. Some of them
look like they are all full up and others seem to be only like a little over half full with large air cells or whatever that is called. can someone send me link to good candled egg pictures.
thanks again.
