HALLOWEEN HATCH!!! Anyone

neferset-- I can't thank you enough for your help---the chick is not out of the woods yet but I know he would have died if you didn't help me, I wouldn't have known what to do.

This was him last night, I slowly pulled back the membrane and it bled a little so I stopped and let him rest for a couple of hours and went back and tried again same thing happened so I waited.

About 12 am, I checked on him and the membrane was so dry on him I peeled it off, it was even stuck a little on his feathers...he chirped alot and this morning about 5am he was wiggling and chirping and opening and closing his eyes. He's in the bathroom with a heat lamp and I ran the shower on hot until the bathroom was humid-----I hope I' doing this right---the rest is up to him I guess

Any advice is more than welcomed!!!!! God Bless!

That is the same thing that i did to mine my little guy only i didn't take off as much as the top as you did.
i just left it in the bator and when i woke up this morning he was out and all dry. I have put him in with
the other 2 that hatched and he seems to be doing ok. Good luck and i say just leave him and see.

Thanks for the good info neferset!!!!!! i must have screwed up my humidity or something because
i only had 3 make it out of 9!! Well i have another hatch due on Friday and now i am all worried about
that one!!! I think this will be it for me on hatching. i just can't seem to get it right.

Thank you Jen! I was worried about how much I took off----I HOPE he's ok! So far I've had 4 healthy hatches and 6 fatalities---due to a young mom and the fact we have other girls who probably laid in her nest so they were all off by up to a week (after inspecting one of the dead chicks) = ( I'm so sad about this---I did as much research as I could possibly do and I still didn't get it right....

Thanks again, I just hope I didn't hurt him any -- He seems very active, licking the air, chirping, responding to chirping wiggling around opening his eyes and looking around...My hatch day was Friday but again he could have been a day or two behind the others...for the others it would be day 24

luvmybob.... you're doing great with him so far...
the shower was a great idea for humidity...
but you still have to watch out for the rest of the membrane drying out... that's what was happening to mine.. he pipped to early and we have no humidity.. it was hard to keep any in the bator...

if it were me, i'd start picking at the sides a bit to make sure he's not shrink wrapped in....
see if you can get just the shell without the membrane and watch for the blood vessels... if you see a vessel that still has blood moister tne membrane and wait a bit longer again... little at a time... and hope fully he'll be tripping all over the place soon

Sorry I wasn't up sooner. I zonked out totally and only woke up when the phone rang. You did about right, I think. If you want to chip away a little more as the membrane dries, you can, though I would concentrate close to his face. Basically, that membrane will hold him like a mummy wrapping without a lot of humidity. (Though the shower should help, I would think. I am tempted to get a room humidifier for my incubators to help them keep their moisture on days when the atmospheric dips. I haven't seen one since I was a little girl, though.)

I usually chip at the front (near the beak/wing--mind his little face) until I see one of the little tucked up feet, then I'll stop. Believe it or not, that foot is tucked not much further down below the pip. From there he will either pick his head up himself or leave it tucked for you to help with. I don't think that does any harm either way. It's more a matter of whether his little wing is stuck to more membrane. Once his head is up, that's absolutely everything you can do though. It can take a while for them to actually climb out of the egg. Mine have taken up to about 8 to 12 hours.

Active is a good sign.

They do better if you do not lift them out of the shell or let them exit early--which is why you have his egg upright. I've had them hatch too early by themselves with no help from me at all when the eggs are on their sides. I might be sold permanently on the egg cartons just because it makes them wait until they can climb up and out. I've had no issues with attached yolks/after births and open body cavities this time around. But...with this method of helping, I did lose one chick anyway. So watch him carefully.

I just checked on him. I thought for sure he would make it, he seemed so healthy, chirping and I even told my kids, I bet he'll be hatched before you get home from school...he passed away about 30 minutes ago... all I can do now is focus on the 4 healthy ones....thanks for all your help XoXo

2 Hatched on Friday and 2 hatched on Halloween--I couldn't name them until I knew they were done hatching so we'll focus on names now......Good Luck to everyone I really wish all the best!

Im sorry I cant be of more help but when Evonne mentioned to chip away the shell without the membrane this video came to mind. This is of a double yolker hatch but it does the job of showing you to kind of seperate the two..

Its the only video ive seen and maybe someone has a better one to show you... the only problem I found is that you shouldnt use a knife but a good pair of tweezers works! Heres the video . Either way you have tried and done what you could... he/she wouldnt be here if it werent for you!!! Good job!!

Edit to say: Im sorry he didnt make it, you did very well! Those babies are precious... saw them and the name "Pumpkin Pie" came to mind
