well just a few hours shy of day 20 i have a fully hatched chick! and to make it even better, it was one of my very own eggs that my WBS pullet layed for me!! I believe it was her third egg she had ever layed until that point. It's one of my "top secret" coss breeds im working on too!!! My very first little V1...how awesome is that!! Also i have a shipped WBS that pip'd a few hours ago too!

Early hatchers worry me....im hoping for the best tho. Quick last question..when you look at your newborn chicks feet...do one or 2 of their main toes stay not completely stretched out??? Just curious...in my last hatch i watched them come out of their eggs and would get sooo worried looking at their feet thinking i would have to tape their toes out and hope they would become 100% straight. But after the first 24 to 48 hours after they hatched ..all the toes stretched out to where they should be and all was well in the world.

I have a question--my eggs are due to hatch under a broody on Friday, is it ok to candle them today just to take a peek at the growth and take her off the nest for her break? I've been taking her off everyday or she would starve and die of thirst, bc she won't budge!

We lost 13 eggs due to my other BO leaving her nest = ( but we have a mix under my other BO from my 2 RIR's, black sex-link and 2 BO so I'm praying all 11 make it!!

Wish me luck and should I lock her in her nest until they hatch? She can still get out if she wants to but the chicks wouldn't be able to?

Slime, Ooze, Slimer, Icabod, Lupus, Luna, Lorticia, It, Thing, Fang again too good not to have mentioned twice, Pugsley, Hant - coloquial for Haunt, Haunt, Evoker, Mage or Magi, you got Rigor but missed Rigor's friend, Maggot. I already have one named Toad, lol. Wart could be cool. I've got one who won't shut up who may be Screetch. Jason would have to be quite a bird.

Went on lockdown last night at 8pm, hoping they start hatching on Friday eve.
I candled all 26 eggs right before lockdown. Very disappointing. Out of 13 each Black Copper Marans and Ameraucanas, I have 6 BCMs and 8 Ams left. I opened a few of the 'clear' ones. A few were scrambled, a couple just never started.
No idea if the ones that looked more 'solid' (which is all you can see in maran eggs at this point and really in the Ams as well) have anything alive in them.
So 14 babies on lockdown. Sure hope they hatch. Pretty big fail rate this time. But what can you do with scrambled eggs.......... I also had several short power outages during this hatch (me scrambling around with quilts to cover the incubator). It's been interesting.
I'll let you know what happens Friday/Saturday
