Halloween ~ Hatch Day!

My 3 remaining OEG hen's eggs that I saved from the cold are very active and developing. They are definitely behind by a few days. They should be almost completely dark, but they are not. They still have very good veining, and are still very active. They look to be about 4 days behind. I haven't checked the hen's eggs that she still has, but she does still have 10 eggs, the last time I caught her off the nest. No exploders, so that's good. I so want to candle them, but the last time I did that with a different hen, then took the bad ones out, she never went back to the nest.

So hopefully her eggs are all good and we will get lots of blue babies!!

Oh dear! How horrible?

When my mama hen sat on her eggs, she had 16 of them & hatched out 15. Yikes! What a surprise that was, we thought she was hawk food about 21 days before that. Never thought she was sitting on eggs!

You will get lots of Blue Babies Shelley!

I just candled again and took out three of my eggs, and 1 EE that was mailed out of the bunch, so I have 10 chicken eggs left due to hatch this weekend. I'm not sure if some of the others have already quit a day or two ago, or if they are just a tad behind. I'll look them all over again on day 18. I just looked really quickly at a few of the quail eggs, but I'll candle them all when I pull the chicken eggs and put them in the other bator for hatching on Wednesday night. The quail are due middle of next week, but I'll just pull them from the turner and leave them in the same bator to hatch. I need to scrub it down when they are done before starting a new bunch...but since my 7 hens are now only laying about three eggs a week, I won't be doing any swaps again soon.

My big goal is to have all the juvies moved out of the house by the end of the week and into their new coop--we'll see if we can manage it. My last bunch of chicks will not be far behind.

I candled on day 18 and opened and tossed two clear eggs. Still had several that were fully dark with chicks, and the one turkey egg, and the blue eggs I can't tell.

Then last night the power went off and I woke up to find the bator temps at 86...

I was expecting a late hatch because I'd kept the lot on the low end of the proper temps. Now they'll be later or not at all. Sigh. Ought to have a smiley where I can beat my own head with a hammer... Lord knows when the turkey will hatch, if it does, at this rate, after the new year.

Boy! I am no expect by far but I think I would wait until she has the chicks. Once they are good & dried off, then move them to where you want them to be.

My mama had hers (what a surprise) & I wanted them to be safe at night so I gathered them all up & moved them to where I wanted them & she was fine with that. Once your girl knows that is where you want her & the chicks, I think things will be OK.

I would be afraid to move them now since it is so close to hatch time, she may freak out & not want to sit on them anymore. I think you should leave her until they are hatched.....just my opinion.

Oh no!! I hope it wasn't in the bator when it blew!!

Yes it explode in the bator. Thanfully it was in the corner so I can hopefully clean it up. Anyone have any suggestions on how to clean up nasty smelling roten egg?

hey guys I come up with a way to add water to the bator after you put them in to hatch without opening the bator. With the heaters coming on humidity in our homes is going to drop and we might have to add water more. I took a siringe without a needle and went to walmart and bought some air tubing for aquariums and cut me a piece two feet long and attached it to the siringe so when i need to add water I fill up the siringe and reattach it to the tubing and put the tubing through one of the plug holes and into the tray. Just thought I would tell you and idea I came up with so you wont have to open bator and lose your humidity. My eggs just went into the hatcher so hope all will hatch.
