Inverted combs. Would you please show me this? Ive never seen or heard of it and am very eager to learn about those defects. My wyandottes have a sprig issue.
These are two of the male chicks that showed it, at different ages, it was hard to get it to photograph really well, the second one especially makes it look like maybe side sprigs too, but having held the birds, it was definitely more than sprigs):

This is a photo I found online, and it shows what these guys would have looked like mature, as far as the comb goes:

Anyway, this is a big derail of the thread ;) If you want to talk about it more, you can PM me if you'd like. It's not something that's very common, and especially not in single comb breeds. I had a really hard time tracking down just what exactly was happening. It typically shows up in rose combs.

Now I'm curious. What is a sprig issue?
A sprig is a "side sprig" and that's when the comb will have extra points, and they will stick out to the side from the base of the comb. It's a serious fault and it will breed on, it's very hard to eliminate.

I'm testing these hens and their pullets to see if this inverted comb is as bad as side sprigs, or if it can be bred out in one outcross.

Very interesting! Thanks!

And I don’t think it’s necessarily a derailment, we’re all here to learn and some people would likely find this interesting or useful. Besides, we gotta kill time till the chicks hatch somehow. :lau

I hope it can be bred out easily. :fl
