There's a great way to fix the "better volunteers" situation ... volunteer! My kids and I volunteer with the Chesapeake Feline Association, our local cat rescue. (www.ChesapeakeFelineAssociation.org)
We used to foster kittens, and have had nearly two dozen pass through our home, but after a bit, the "foster fails" started to add up. You know those, the ones you decide that, for one extremely valid reason or another, you just can't pass along. I woke up one morning to three cats in my face ... literally. On my way to feeding them, I tripped over a fourth ... and that was the end of fostering for us! We now volunteer directly at the shelter and at the occasional adoption event, and we advocate for them as often as we get the chance.

My "Decision Morning" - not my pic, but just visualize this shot, times three!

That sounds like a great idea!!!

Don't be too harsh on the charges, though. You're not really paying for your pet, you're giving the shelter the resources to rescue another, which often includes expensive medical care before it can even be ready for adoption. And we all know that medical care these days ... for pets or people ... ain't cheap!

Hmm that’s true but idk... I still think $600 or $700 for a mutt of unknown origin is a little bit crazy. Some are cheaper but most around here are no less than $400 or $500 and often they already have all their medical care from the shelter they got them from for probably much cheaper than that then they ship them up here on trucks in crates stacked on top of each other and you have to meet the truck in some random state... it all just seems a little sketchy to me. I’m sure some of them are nice and try hard but I do also think “rescue retail” is a thing too. As evidenced by the fact that I have seen places list the purebred dogs or desirable, “cute”, small breeds for way more money. We’re also importing tons of dogs from overseas (often with diseases, several of these dogs recently have brought brucellosis into the country) yet we supposedly have a huge pet overpopulation problem here? So why import more? Sorry, I’ll atop here before I get into trouble haha I don’t mean to bash rescue. I know most of them are good people and work very hard and want what’s best for the animal but there’s just a lot about the current rescue model that doesn’t make sense to me. I love rescue dogs, DB has two and they are amazing and their neighbor has an amazing rescue too, rescues are great but the current model isn’t. Most also don’t even have a real building anymore and they’re all in foster homes so there’s really no overhead

The last dog was $125, and aprx 1 1/2. He was abused at the shelter.
Another shelter knowingly had Parvo, but adopted out the dogs.
A third had a dog with a huge tumor. The dog just laid there, and cried.
After adopting the dog, we brought him to the vet that happened to have signed the medical records a few weeks before. Her comment? She had never seen our dog, and it wasn’t her signature. She was angry with the shelter for forging her signature.

Oh wow that is awful!! This is the exact kind of thing that makes people distrust rescues aha

Is anyone else feeling like the eggs are going to start hatching in a few days instead of another week and a half?
Yes. Yes, I do feel like they will start hatching now.

Hope this cures your chick fever!
Sorry about the penguins.

I dont even like to think about it so i havent mentioned it But...

I once did community service at an animal shelter. They had at least half a dozen of us that were there on community service from all walks of life. I met one good guy in 6 months and got to know several of the vet techs. The actual employees were as nice as possible to the critters but those community service guys? Most of them were real jerks. Wish we could get paid well for doing the work making alot of people interested in it but being govt funded the jobs just arent able to pay well enough for the kind and educated. Also it breaks down the kind people. All those critters i would feed one day that were gone the next? Heart breaking. They haunted me and id see them as i tried to sleep at night. I got outa there as fast as i could and looking back on it i wish id talked to my parol officer and made her understand that it was too hard on my mental health.
