I dont even like to think about it so i havent mentioned it But...

I once did community service at an animal shelter. They had at least half a dozen of us that were there on community service from all walks of life. I met one good guy in 6 months and got to know several of the vet techs. The actual employees were as nice as possible to the critters but those community service guys? Most of them were real jerks. Wish we could get paid well for doing the work making alot of people interested in it but being govt funded the jobs just arent able to pay well enough for the kind and educated. Also it breaks down the kind people. All those critters i would feed one day that were gone the next? Heart breaking. They haunted me and id see them as i tried to sleep at night. I got outa there as fast as i could and looking back on it i wish id talked to my parol officer and made her understand that it was too hard on my mental health.

Oh wow that sounds awful! I’m sorry. :hit :hugs

It definitely seems like it would be draining, especially at those kill shelters. There’s sooooo many dogs down south. Lots of other places to but especially down there.

So I do think getting dogs and puppies out of there and into foster homes and hopefully forever homes, even it means sending them up here, is a good thing, but I just don’t like how you know basically nothing about them.

And also there’s soooo many that no one wants to take them.

SIL just recently tried to find fosters for a litter of puppies down south somewhere, not sure where, she was helping the rescue they got one of their dogs from, but nobody wanted to take them and they all basically just said that there’s so many that they’re all either full or just don’t want them and you can’t save them all and it’s so sad/to prepare for it. And it does seem sad.

Cause they were saying if she could find fosters for them they could get them out of the shelter, they were scheduled to be put down like the next day or in a few days, but no one wanted them :hit idk if they ever found fosters or not.

But that’s part of why I don’t really get why so many dogs are being imported when there’s soooo many being put down. But I guess nobody wants pits and pit mixes which there’s tons of. It’s all about the cute, adoptable ones, or which one has the saddest story, sadly :hit

Animal rescues are also tough. Not a good situation. :hugs

X2

I don’t think I could do it.

Also don’t think I could be a therapist or a nurse or teacher or a caregiver or SAR worker or EMT or any of those other super tough jobs. Idk how people do it. I never could.

Nope. Only been 24 hours since first popped. 4 eggs left. :caf

Well, maybe 36 hours. They got until tomorrow after work.

When do you stop hatching? We got some cool weather this week.

Thats a pretty spread hatch compared to me. Usually i can pretty much call it at 24 hrs from the first hatchling but i give them 48 just in case. Sometimes it depends on how badly i need to move onto the next lockdown :gig have to clean the hatcher and stop turning the next set. i always double check with candling before i toss em.

The last dog was $125, and aprx 1 1/2. He was abused at the shelter.
Another shelter knowingly had Parvo, but adopted out the dogs.
A third had a dog with a huge tumor. The dog just laid there, and cried.
After adopting the dog, we brought him to the vet that happened to have signed the medical records a few weeks before. Her comment? She had never seen our dog, and it wasn’t her signature. She was angry with the shelter for forging her signature.
There are bad apples in every bunch. We've had nothing but rescues for thirty years and haven't come across any major issues. Most of our animals have "found" us, but a few came from organized rescue operations recommended by friends. The only one we've ever had an issue with is our latest rescue. She's working out well, finally, but we used an unfamiliar rescue organization, this time, and there were some serious behavior issues. All's well, now. Luckily, we've been around the block a few times with difficult dogs, so we knew how to adapt and handle our wayward pup. Overall, we've been lucky, I guess ... more like blessed, with our animals. I'll do it again ... and again ... and again, as often as I can.

I have a very important doggie item on my "Bucket List." One day, I'm going to simply walk into a shelter lobby without looking at any dogs. I figure that the staff knows their charges better than anyone else could, especially just by walking past a cage.
I'll find a staffer who seems to actually care - there's always at least one - and outline all the important details of life with me - yard size, lifestyle, schedule, etc. I'll add that age, size, breed and gender don't matter at all. All I really need is a sweet face and a sweeter disposition. I'll end with simply saying, "Bring me someone who needs me," and that's the dog that will join my family.
I'm not in a position to do that, just yet, but I will be. I will be. I promise.
