Hands on hatching and help

The two crushed shelled chicks I had to get out early are truly miracle babies. They both survived and are doing well. The cords and attached membrane shriveled up and was the size of sewing thread so I cut it with no problems at all. They are both in the coop with the stupid broody mom. I have several hatching now so I'll post pics of the gang soon! Here's a pic of one just before getting them out a couple days ago, and both of them today.

That's awesome. I thought for sure I had doomed those chicks by telling you they would suffocate. I'm so happy you got them out!

:clap

That's great!!!

So my nephew texted me yesterday t o find out how his eggs are doing and to tell me that as soon as they are hatched he has more eggs for me. While I was talking to my sister on the phone today he had walked in and asked if I knew what I was hatching next, I guessed guineas (supposedly, he has the eggs figured out now, and after seeing a pic they sent, I'd would say they are right this time,)and he's like yup, that's my job the rest of the summer..... um as much as I like hatching....and I said let me know if you want anything hatched, but um am I getting paid???? lol Good thing summer is coming to a close....lol

I figure after this hatch I'll probably do one batch of the guineas for him and that's going to put us in early fall, so that should be about it.

So here's something interesting: while trying to find out how to tell the sex of turkeys I came across a post in which someone claimed they could sex both poults and chicks as day olds by flipping them onto their backs and watching what they did with their legs. Certain behavior indicated female and other behavior indicated male. They said it worked for them with 94% accuracy. I didn't believe it but decided for fun to try it out. So far I've done my sultans with it and my naked necks. The sultans I still can't tell the sex (they take longer to be able to tell the genders apart like silkies and polish do), but this method actually worked and sexed my NNs with 100% accuracy. Now that could be a coincidence and I'm going to keep trying this and keeping track just for fun but I thought that was kind of neat. I'm gonna try the rest of my chicks with it as they hatch and we'll see what happens. A fun experiment :D

:fl    Good luck.  Will be interesting to see if those slightly-incubated ones hatch much sooner.  I'm resisting setting more.

If you consider buying that flashlight, check which batteries it takes first.  My son bought me an awesome tactical flashlight, works great for candling, but the bad news is the batteries.  It uses a non-standard size, takes two of them, and they are like $5-6 each.  Price wouldn't be so bad if they lasted longer, but it dims fairly quickly.  Lasts a while after that, but dims to the point of my next brightest flashlight, and that one uses AAA's, so I don't bother keeping the tactical in fresh ones.  :/

I actually didn't set the ones with veins. I was tempted to because I wanted to see if they would start again but all the veins pooled into a circle, floated around the top and the yolk was all scrambled at the bottom. I've only seen a couple rotten eggs and they resembled that "sloshie-ness" so I thought best to chuck them. They were being stored for over a week with no heat after the development started. But trust me...there was temptation. Lol.

And tell me about it with the batteries and the flashlights! Almost all of my candlers take those special 3023 batteries that are expensive! And they do die quick. I found a 4 pack at Walmart once for $13 and I bought two packs but I already went through them all!! I have one that takes AAA and I've been using that one. But the tactical sounded cool. I'd like to try one and compare it to the ones I use but don't want to shell out the money.

This broody silkie hen is the stupidest ever. I told you earlier she had pooped all over the eggs, now this has happened. Great mom but terrible sitter.

Wow! That's crazy! So far all my broody silkies are amazing sitters but terrible moms!

Hey guys sorry my post are so sporadic. The ameracauna chick finally hatched almost on its own a few hours ago. The yolk was absorbed and all the veins receded. It tried zipping on its own but it's leg got stuck and the membrane was to tough where it initially pipped. Anyways it's here now and it's stomach looks engorged and it's bellybutton looks unhealed. It can't lay on its stomach and keeps rolling over onto it's back. Can I do something for it? What's going on?

Sometimes right after they hatch the belly area will be extremely swollen but that should go down and seal up in a few hours.

So my 3 ameracauna chicks have hatched. 2 are healthy and adorable. The one that needed the help out seems to have an issue with its legs. One leg seems to be placed farther to the front while the other is set back. I tried making a brace last night and it did help a little. It's not walking yet. Not sure where to go with it but I guess I'll figure it out. :)

I would check it for a slipped tendon. I had one like that once. It was really sad and I couldn't put it back in place. But sometimes you can. Did you check out this site?

It's great to hatch for someone else as long as they pick up the hatchlings right away. The worst is getting stuck with chicks you're not keeping for a week or more!!

Yes I'm setting these orpingtons I got and then absolutely no more lol. I know I said that before but I'm so serious. I'm ready to be done for the season lol. :)

Keep us updated that's really interesting. I'd love to know if it works on most breeds. :)

It's starting to crawl around like an army crawl. I'll check out the site you shared. I hope it was just in an odd position and so maybe it needs time to work it out. I had one do this before. It was the little buff silkie. It took time to heal but it walks like normal now. :)

Hey guys all my jubilee's have hatched except 2. One has internally pipped but the other hasn't that I can tell and it looks weird. I can see the chicks chest breathing hard so I know it's alive. The way the egg is looks like it may be shrink wrapped. What do you guys think?

It's like the chick is squished all to one side. Half is all lit up and the other side is dark..

Tell me about it. I hatched out some chicks and guineas for a neighbor and kept asking when he was going to get them. "This weekend", which kept coming and going. Finally had enough and took them down and put them in his pen. They were hatched in May!!!!
