Hands on hatching and help

I was just outside letting the chickens free range while my 1 & 1/2 year old played in his kiddie pool. I was sitting about 25 feet from the tree line at the back of the property where the woods start and I heard something fly up from the ground. It sounded huge and I was scared it was going to be a hawk. I looked up and there was a giant wild male turkey on the tree branch. It was beautiful. I wanted to show my son, so we slowly and quietly walked toward him. There was a female and about a dozen baby turkeys on the ground! The poults looked about 8 weeks old. It was such a beautiful sight to see the whole family. When the mom saw us she took the babies and ran but the male hung out for awhile. Of course freaking the chickens and ducks out the whole time!

The leg is probably why it couldn't zip on its own. :(
Personally I'd try banding together first, like splay leg, and see if it can try to start using it. I prefer a small band aid cut to fit, depending on their size.

Ok that's what I'll do. Thanks. :)

I just lost all my Hand Hatched Chicks. A Raccon Got Them last night. I had them in a large dog kennel, wrapped in netting with a light on. But siblings apparently unplugged the lamp, and never plugged it back in, so a Raccon decided to eat and kill them. I guess I am gonna reinforce the netting. They weren't even two months. I had just started letting them outside to introduce into the older flock. Oh well. I have 20 eggs in the incubator. I hope they hatch, around 18-23, 10 of the eggs are five days ahead.

Aww so sorry. :(

Ugh so my last jubilee egg didn't make it. I'm not sure why. Maybe lack of oxygen. It never did internally pup but when I opened it up it wasn't shrink wrapped. I feel bad but I know their was nothing I could do until it internally pipped anyways so I guess it was gods will. Still feel sad about it though. :(

Well this evening I'll be setting my variety orpington eggs that my husband got me for my birthday. He knows I have a sweet spot for them. The breeder sent chocolate cuckoo, lemon cuckoo, chocolate cuckoo with split black I think lol and mottled. I feel like I'm forgetting one lol. Oh well. :) can't wait for them to hatch. Especially since these are the last for this season. I also found a home for 2 roosters and 4 hens. I'm ecstatic about the roosters lol. They are going to little hobby farms where they will be loved!! Today has been a pretty good day. :) Anyone else setting anymore eggs before fall?

I'm sorry. Hows the one with the bad leg doing?

Large fowl? I think the chocolates are just gorgeous. I'm trying to hold off hatching any more this season. :fl

I'm planning to set some of my own AC eggs :) But that's all I really plan to hatch between now and when I stop for the winter.

It's actually doing better. I gave it some vitamins fist and it's started walking. The legs still aren't perfect but much better. :) as for the orpingtons they are large fowl. I love bantams but the large fowl are just so fluffy lol. We do keep white crested black polish bantams though. :)
This is for sure the last of the hatching I'll be doing. It's just tough because we got almost no hens this year. Just roosters. I've been giving a few hens away free when someone takes a rooster to sweeten the deal lol. We only gave away 4 hens and already we have more roosters then hens. :(

Do you have bad winters where your from? Northern California doesn't have as nice of weather as southern but the rain doesn't usually start here until closer to october. It also stays dry and hot until the end of September. This will be my last hatch though. We just really need some hens. :) less roosters lol. :p

That's a nice present! I'm glad to hear that chick is doing a little better. I got a little carried away looking at eggs yesterday. There is this truly amazing breeder that I had saw old photos and posts from here on byc from years ago. I had tried to contact her on byc, hoping maybe she would still check her messages but never heard back. Yesterday I found her on FB and she still sells eggs here and there. I drooled over the pictures of her birds for an hour and then sent a pm. I think I've lost my mind because the eggs are $$$$ and she is in the state of Washington! (I'm in NY). Yup, I lost my mind. If I could actually get these eggs to hatch it would be amazing bloodlines to add to my breeders. But it's a long distance for those eggs to travel. She said she would contact me for payment on Friday or Saturday and ship Monday. If this pans out you will here me freaking out the whole 21 days.

Does anyone know if ducklings can be born with eye worms? I think my ducking has eye worm.

I couldn't see much from the pics, only the first pic. Are the toes curled? Does there seem to be any deformities to the leg or foot? The one slipped tendon I had you could feel at what we would consider a "knee". Feel a couple of the other chicks first (so you know what it's supposed to feel like) and then feel how the leg bends and moves at that joint. With a slipped tendon when you feel that joint the bone will move out of place from side to side. I tried holding the chick by its hocks and moving so it would feel like it was falling and then try to pull up. Sometimes that motion of them pulling up while being suspended in mid air will pop the joint back in place. From the pic you posted it didn't really seem splayed but more like it couldn't use that leg. Does it put pressure on it or bend it?
Oh no!! That's so sad!! :hugs

It's more like a birth defect. It's started walking now but the legs are placed strange. One is more to the front and the other is to the back. We felt for a long time trying to put it in place but couldn't feel a difference. The only thing I've noticed is sometimes the one that sticks out more feels a bit stiff.

Aww we love wild turkeys. We have alot in our area, that and wild guineas. I love watching them with their babies in the spring. :)

Oh I hope it all works out! Alot of my eggs come from Georgia and Missouri. I don't know why but I can't find what I want closer lol. I still have a good number hatch usually. Lately I've been getting alot of malpositions though... :(

I'm not positive but I do know that worms can be transferred to chickens eggs, yummy.... :/ I assume if it can be transferred to the egg that it can be given to the duckling. I've had eye problems with hatching quite a bit though. Low humidity can sometimes cause issues..
