Hands on hatching and help

Why is it so dark??

I see veining and it looks fine to me, but you want to candle through the air cell. You'll be able to see what's going on much better that way and you can assess the air cell.

I used a flashlight and some of mine proved difficult to see into especially the porous shells, I had a small green one left me guessing till the end.... that being said what day are you on? What does the air cell look like?

That eggs looks fine as far as I can tell . Darker eggs are harder to see in and sometimes
veins are not obvious. This is a Marans egg a little more advanced than seven days more like nine days the top right corner is the air cell candled from the top of the egg . You can see the line between fluid and air . Your light seems to be strong enough but candling in your hand the air cell may be covered by your hand .Take a box large enough to put your hand in holding the light make a small hole in the box about the size of a quarter . Holding the egg horizontal put the top to the hole and shine the light through the hole . you will see the air cell . Use your search engine and type in candling and marking air cells in chicken eggs .The chances are it will take you to a thread on Backyard chickens . I am not the best person to direct you on doing this I just don't do it . there are 120 eggs in my incubator now and that is just to many to do . this was the best picture I had of a air cell I will try to take some more I have seven and fourteen days at the moment . I also have eggs hatching today that will carry over till tomorrow . @ AmyLynn show this person air cell pictures you got tons of them

I have to admit I'm a baby hatching helper. I can't seem to help myself. If I see one struggling and with him it doesn't get out I usually start to help him. Within 24 hours. I can't tell you how many chicks I lost by doing the wait-and-see method. They're cute little chirping is there and then the next thing you know they're dead.

There is a picture icon in your message box if your uploading it's the 3rd box over looks like a "picture of a mountain". Hope that helps. Rough hatch had 7/7 leghorns pop right out healthy and happy well and then there were the BCM eggs had no idea what was inside the remaining 7 (1 stunk) they had a rough time hatching only left w/ 3 one pulled its belly button open and stuff started coming out and so it was culled and then another was lethargic this morning when I got up tried to wake it not much response, read to try to get it to take some egg yolk raw. Well it did and then had what appeared to be a seizure in my hand and died.... Ugh! Idk if it overheated or had ingested some fluid while hatching.... Hoping the 3 remaining chicks do ok one is really tiny! My next batch is due on Thanksgiving I just set them up in lockdown only 6 out of the 25 made it most were clears/ scrambled total bummer!!!
Congrats on the hatchers! Good luck with the BCMs.

Strength of your light will effect it and what Pyxis said....through the air cell gives you the best view.

I'll have to hook my laptop to the TV and see if I can find some good ones. My son and his dog broke my laptop screen so I've been using the iPad and I don't function as well on it...lol. Though you found a couple good ones!!

Welcome to the thread! Perfect place to be! I am a big meddler and if a chick has been pipped 18-24 hours I have no qualms starting an assist.

Hey guys I haven't really been on here in awhile since we haven't been hatching much. We do have 3 eggs under our broody that are due tomorrow. I went out and candled them today and 2 have externally pipped. One of the eggs mama stepped on and cracked the shell. I brought it inside and peeled some of the outer shell away and put cornstarch on the spots that were bleeding. I out vaseline on the exposed membrane and stuck it in the incubator so I can keep an eye on it. Hoping it makes it...

I set nineteen eggs yesterday. Everything from Black Copper Marans to Easter Eggers to Brahmas. Can't wait to have rainbow babies! It's my little contribution toward an inclusive, more tolerant world....;-)

I dropped one and cracked it all up didn't do anything but put it back in the hatcher and it hatched and did fine . No blood loss though . I've had a broody crush the egg as the chick was zipping and kill it before . Hope your doctoring works

It still has alot of veining. Going to give it until tomorrow and if it still hasn't hatched may give it a help out. Looks pretty weak tonight. Probably from the blood loss.. fingers crossed.
