Hands on hatching and help

That's not good, I didn't see that in your last picture. Take a look and check to see if it's unabsorbed yolk and blood vessels or if it's coming from the vent and is a hernia.

If it's coming from the navel, it can possibly be saved. You're going to want to get it into a paper towel lined cup immediately so it isn't dragging that around and risking rupturing it. Then you want to make sure the incubator stays nice and humid so it doesn't dry out as it absorbs.

If it's a hernia coming from the vent, there's not much that can be done to my knowledge. In that case, it might be kinder to put it out of its misery.

It's from the vent. How do you all euthanize them?

*****UPDATE******
I took another look and it is the navel!! Yeah!! So it's in a small container with a paper towel lining and I put in more warm water to bump up the humidity even higher. It was at 68% since I took most of the dry chicks out so this should help. I'm not sure what you meant by a cup. It wiggled out of a "Dixie cup butt" protector so I had a plastic "French onion dip" container lined with a paper towel and put it in that, in the incubator. Is that ok? I'm sorry I just don't know what I'm doing!! Thank god for you all!!!

That'll work! :fl that it's able to get everything absorbed properly.

Hello everyone, new member here. I have a question.

I have a question. I'm new to incubating and my first batch is hatching. I had 2 chicks hatch and was doing fine like chirping and stumbling around and stuff. Well I believe it was the 2nd chick that hatched out and within a few hrs later I checked on them and that one was dead.. can anyone tell what could of possibly happened to it.

I have my temp at 37.8 Celsius and Hume at 69.

Sorry you lost the chick. It could be a number of things .It's core temperature could have dropped if there is a cold spot in the incubator. It could have ripped open its belly. Could be it carried a disease of some kind. Do you see where it might have lost it's yolk or didn't absorb it all? Is there a lot of blood spread around ?Really hard to say sometimes what happened . Stress will do it too .Was it alive long enough to fluff up? I'm just putting down whatever pops up here . Good luck with the other one and the rest of the hatch .

Sometimes that little excess fluid will make them a bit sticky, but I've also seen it absorbed by the time they actually hatch. Just watch when it hatches that the eyes and nares are clear. Otherwise, it will wear off or you can bathe it off.
:fl
Since yesterday the duckling has filled the pointed end quite abit so hopefully I won't have a disaster again! My last batch drowned due to to much fluid

Another question. As this is the furthest I've gone hatching duck eggs it's day 27 and it hasn't internally pipped yet. Still movement and the egg does the occasional wobble but is that ok? Or do I just have a lazy duckling?

Is there anyway you can get it off the leg without pulling it or cutting it? It's not going to finish absorbing if it's wrapped, but pulling it can cause more damage. If you leave it alone it might dry up, it doesn't look like a lot there?
By the next day, it was not yellow and look obsorbed but was left with what looked to be a rubberband around the leg. It was getting smaller around the leg cutting circulation. So I used a small kitten nail trimmers and cut it, then placed back into the bator.
Within a few hours it wasnt standing but was trying really hard.

Very strange yolk problem... Does the umbilicus/yolk look centered, or is is offset to the right hand side of the chick?
It was centered but was being pulled over towards the leg. Very strange!

How is this one doing? Did it absorb?
It looked promising! I made a chick chair for it and it was doing really well! It was even standing by itself and making progress of walking.
The belly looked normal, it was eating and drinking good.
One morning I woke up and it had passed :(

Sometimes it's just a mystery. W/o any physical symptoms it's hard to tell. Could have been hatched with an internal issue, could have aspirated on extra fluid that got into it's lungs. Omphelitus, is another. I'm sorry to hear you lost one.

Aw! Sorry to hear that. It sucks when you think they are improving and you still loose them.

We are a very accepting group of people on this thread. While we have our philosophies, we accept others do things differently. However, this thread is for hatchers that are hands on. We are here to interact with other hands on hatchers and to help those who want to be hands on or assist so that they know how to do this with the least risk to the hatchling. Please, do not come on this thread telling our members not to help or leave them alone. We started this as a condemnation free space for like minded individuals to get away from that kind of conceit and narrow mindedness. Many of us have helped hatchlings and other members so they could save a chick that otherwise wouldn't have made it, more often than not due to human error during incubation. If you are a hands off hatcher and not open minded to other methods, this is NOT the thread for you.
