I agree, I constantly get people tell me, OMG, he's shrink wrapped how do I help him, when in fact it's not, usually LOL it's Sticky. LOL.. If you ever seen a membrane from a sticky chick, the membrane actually will show lumps and wrinkles making it look shrink wrapped but when you open it, BOOM all this fluid will come out. LOLShipped eggs are such a pain! (And I haven't even started mine yet, lol) Sorry it's looking grim. I'd hold out hope for anything that started developing, cause I am like that.)
I think there are a lot of things we do that aren't "necessary". Look at how many people that have had hatches start before they went into lockdown and have had chicks hatch in 35-40% humidity. I don't believe the majority of people who think they've "shrink wrapped" a chick has actually shrink wrapped either. I honestly don't think people truely understand what that is and I think when they eggtopsy and see that membrane around the chick they think OMG he's shrinkwrapped, when in reality the membrane really is around the chick like that. One of the reasons chicks placement during hatch is head under wing is because that wing pushes up and holds the inner membrane away from the chick to give it a little room. It does look like what we would imagine as "shrink wrapped", but it really isn't. I think it's a reason people give their failed hatches because they need an answer as to why the chicks didn't make it and can't find any other. I've NEVER had a pipper/zipper die. I've never had a chick shrink wrap from opening the bator, (I don't belive shrink wrapping can happen from a few seconds of dry air.) I do believe that the membrane around the pips can become dry and stick to the chick from air drying any fluid and the moist membrane. I would NEVER recommend a hands on hatcher, especially one like myself to be "hands on" w/out the higher humidity though as a precaution. It's not a matter of just opening the bator a couple times. I am literally frequently opening my bator during hatch and it's a good precaution to have higher humidity with my habits. And NO I have no intention to change my hatching style. I have awesome hatches and this is what is comfort to me and I see no need to change it for someone else's comfort. Could I be in the bator less, yes I could. DO I need to start an assit at 24 hours, no, but then again, I've never lost a chick after pip.... that's why we really wanted to do this thread, that's why I am such a pusher of "Doing what is right and comfortable for you, regardless of others. I see so many hatchers push methods as the only way to do it, or do it like this or else and it makes me sooo mad. I see people missing out on the true experience of hatching because they are afraid to candle an egg because someone has warned them off candling. People who have never seen an internal pip because OMG that's after "lockdown". How do you learn if you don't know what you are looking at? I am so glad to be hands on person and get the most from my hatches.
I love in your face moments, I have to admit. I get flack for being the "bleeding heart" that will give a chick every opportunity before I give up on it.

I'm hoping to get my eggs today from @RubyNala97 . The tracking says tomorrow, but they hit Syracuse (which is two hours from me) last night at 5, so there's no reason they shouldn't be here today that I can see. So hopefully I'll be able to set. I am planning on a midnight setting...woohoo!!! Can't wait to candle and check out the air cells.
I always refer people to my site, Especailly if they are new, gives them a starting point, because there's soooo many conflicting hatching ways on the internet, it can be overwhelming and false information. I know, I was there, I thought I did all the research one could do and yet nothing seemed to work. i finally had to go with trail and error. Correct what I thought was wrong and keep trying. It's the only way to learn...
Candling, OMG, Candling is the best, I haven't heard any tell me they have been warned not to candle. LOL, I always Candle, I say candle as much as you can, it's a great way to see how the process works and gives you a better understanding as far as what actually happens. I have candled from day 1 to the end. I love watch the process and they grow sooooo fast in that little shell.
I get a lot of slack if the hatching isn't successful. I'm a SUPER star if it does but MAN, if it fails, WOW. I'm like the worst person in the world, it's like a no win situation. I have to keep telling myself, I didn't get this chick in this position.. LOL
