Hands on hatching and help

Thanks to both of you! Lol well I was a Vet Tech for many years, but had not dealt with that before with a chicken. Even with surgical experience and dealing with other unpleasant things over the years it was still intimidating to deal with. Unfortunately, she is still not out of the woods. The prolapse is back this morning although much smaller and less inflamed, she keeps pushing the tissue out

So I'll have to keep working on her through the day.

I still have the pony dealing with pneumonia too so I'm at week 2 crushing up 35 pills a day, mixing up a paste each time and administering her meds through a feeding syringe 3x a day too :th

I need a vacation lol.

Lol I need a vacation too. Last night I went out to the coop to put everyone to bed and noticed 2 of my hens are breathing heavy and their noses sound stuffed up. I gave them some antibiotics in their water right away but now I'm freaking out. We have all these new baby chicks. I'm just praying none of the kids have tracked anything in. :(

What does DIS mean?
The One I Helped Hatch I Thought Was Dead, (it was the egg with Wax I Helped), So I Opened The Air Cell To Do An EggTopsy, I Found An Air Cell Pip, It Couldn't BREATHE, The Position In The Egg Wouldn't allow him to Pip the shell, after an hour or two of helping, he had absorbed everything, he was really weak though because he developed in a ROUND EGG, he is the smallest out of all of my New Baby Chicks.
I Would have had 5 baby chicks but one died before it internally Pip.

Dead in Shell... sorry you lost one. I don't think the round egg has anything to do with it though...

Anybody else have issues with really round eggs?

So, I wish I had thought more about this ROUND egg issue. I had one lavender orpington that had not hatched when I got the last golden sebright out of the incubator yesterday morning. Very round egg. I thought sure it was dead, but candled and saw an internal pip, so I left it. Later it still hadn't pipped externally, so I made a safety hole. It worked the hole a little, and even had some really good strong breaks (not pip-like, but long cracks) in the shell, as of this morning. I thought sure it would make it out on its own. It was already 48 hours past the first hatcher.

So I went home at lunch to check it, and I could see the membrane was dried and brown. Pulled it out of the incubator and no response inside the egg. Opened the egg to find a dead, but perfectly formed, full yolk absorbed baby inside. But... It was UPSIDE DOWN! That's why it couldn't break free. It was a very round egg, so I think that's why it was upside down. I don't know how it actually pierced the air cell to begin with, but if I had helped this morning, it probably would have been fine. It would have taken a full assist to figure out its position, it was really odd. But anyway, at least I know. And I'm going to pretend it was a rooster that I don't need anyway.

Aww I'm sorry. My book sais not to set round eggs, larger eggs or pores eggs. Of course all mine have been shipped so I don't want to toss eggs if I've paid for them lol. I know it said that complications can arise from these type of eggs though and that they should not be set. This is just what I read though. I don't have much experience on the issue. Someone else might have done it all the time and had no problems. :)

Hope you have a pedalstool&mortar. Yowzers!
They sell just the powder pre crushed.

Eh, could be some reasoning behind it, but alot of their eggs are fairly round, and I've never had a problem before, and gotten very pretty chicks from them. I just don't like long, pointy eggs lol!

I do try to set the best shells, smooth, clean, etc. But I will likely avoid ones with super round bottoms now. (if possible)

Yeah I have a super round one in right now. Don't want to take it out though because I only have a few of those. I'll have to keep a close eye on it..

Yes, please do! If mine dying helps save this one for you, or anyone else's, then at least I'm glad I shared the info.

I'm sure I'll still set them if I have to, but I'll pay closer attention to them.

Holy cow! you are amazing!

I am on day 6 of my first hatch. I just candled and out of 6 eggs I have 4 definite, 1 not sure, and 1 blood ring. These are shipped eggs so, I was hoping for a 25% hatch, and I would still be surprised with more than that, but I was so excited to see those veins! :ya The one with the blood ring had bubbles in it at the beginning and even after letting it sit for 24 hours, it didn't look like the others.

Its an amazing process and I'm having so much fun. So are my 3 toddlers that are patiently waiting for day 21 and taking care of our other ladies. Bought 4 double-laced Barnevelders last night. We are having fun building our flock. I also get a big coop and run in about 7 weeks. They will be spoiled birds. :D

Thanks for the kind words but I definitely don't feel amazing lol. Just doing my best to keep up with it all!
:fl for your eggs
Wow you have 3 patient toddlers?!?!? Now THAT'S amazing :lau

wooow! That is a lot of work! Yes time for a vacay after all is calm!! But good job on everything you've done and are still doing!! You're pretty amazing!!:)

Thanks that's very nice of you to say :hugs

:hugs sorry about your chick.
I appreciate you sharing what happened. I have a couple of round shipped eggs and others are pipping and hatching now, so I'm going to watch those round ones very carefully!
