Hands on hatching and help

Day at 18! First day of my first lockdown. So excited! I received 6 shipped eggs and 4 made it past day 7. They got banged up pretty good in shipping and 2 had detached air cells. They developed into saddles and last night, after prepping the bator for lock down I decided to lay them on their sides with likely pip point up, just to see what would happen and the air cells fixed themselves! They look beautiful this morning! Here's to my soon to be pipping and hopefully some fuzzy butts!:fl. :jumpy
Yay! Good luck on your hatch!

Okay ladies and gents,...advice please....My lone Serama baby is still peeping inside its egg, but still no external pip. I noticed that it was internally pipped around 1am last night, so it has been approximately 12 hours now. No telling how long it was internally pipped before I noticed. I've been keeping an eye on it and it seems to still be energetically peeping. But,...I'm so nervous it's not going to externally pip. I opened up the two babies eggs that didn't make it, and they are perfect other than their yolk sacs not being absorbed, but I'm sure they died around two days ago. There was no extra fluid in their eggs, they were not shrink wrapped, and their air cells looked normal. They were perfect little black feathered babies, one with white feathers on its underbelly. With these two dying for no apparent reason, I'm super super scared that this one is never going to make an external pip. I've been playing it sounds of chicks peeping from Youtube and shining a light on it to encourage it to make an external pip,....and nada. I'm so torn right now,...I don't want to assist it before it needs assisting, but I also don't want to lose it seeing as that it is the lone survivor. I practiced making an air hole on the two dead babies eggs,...the first one I accidently cracked it straight through the membrane, but with the second one I refined my technique and was able to score the egg and chip a piece away carefully, wetting the membrane right after (even though the dead one had no veins left, I wanted to practice in case I need to help the baby that is still alive). Please someone with experience, maybe even with Serama eggs since they are so tiny, give me some much needed advice!

I can't tell you what to do because I'm not there. But if it were me in your shoes I would wait till Adleast the 24 hour mark as long as it's still chirping and sounds good. I have assisted 1 chick to early and it bled out. It had pipped the wrong end and I was trying to make a safety hole. I've never felt so awful in my life. I know you don't want to wait to long but it's very easy to accidentally slice a vein when they haven't externally pipped yet. Good luck. I'm in the same boat but with duck eggs right now.. :)

As tough as it is for you to decide, its also tough for us, on the other side of a computer, to make recommendations without worrying about making the wrong one. It sounds like everything is running smoothly, and you just need someone to say "WAIT".... so I'll agree with Jennifer and say that I'd wait. At least until 18-20 hours, longer if possible. Evaluate again in a few hours. They are very fragile and tiny eggs, so any assistance is going to be difficult. It would be much better for it to do it on its own.

But still, you have to go with your gut! And good luck!

ETA - meant to also say great job practicing on the other eggs! Awesome idea.

I am going to continue to monitor every few hours. Ughhh,..I really just need this little booger to make a tiny little hole to reassure me. Assisting will be my last option, but I just really don't want to see it die for no reason like the other two babies. BTW-Good luck on your duck eggs. I saw the two that have already hatched and they are ADORABLE!

We are all sitting here on pins and needles at my house.

Thank you. I needed to check the DIS babies anyway to see if I could discern what the cause of death was, fortunately, they served as a practice assist for me and I feel as if I learned quite a bit of useful tidbits. I am going to hold off as long as I can, checking every few hours to make sure the baby is still peeping away in its shell. I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope it makes its little external pip on its own.

Woohoo!! Is it just me, or is that blood on his back? Good luck!!

Yes, that's what I was thinking!

Good luck!! I've done lots of shipped and I always lay the saddles down too for hatch. :fl
Lol no blood. I know it looks like it but it's from the brooder light.. :)

Thank god! They are beautiful!

I agree, I would wait. 24 hours is just a guide, it can take less time or more time. A safety hole is just a tiny hole to allow oxygen in. It should be no bigger then the tip of a pen or pencil. You definitely won't see membranes with a safety hole. I use a very pointy screw and just twist it while trying to only apply pressure right there until it penetrates. It's nerve wrecking! Lol. The peeping is a great sign that he's strong & healthy! Here's a pic of a safety hole:
