Hands on hatching and help

Yay!!! When are you setting? I'm on day 3! And please tell me how you do the vent coloring, I've been wanting to try it forever.

Well I may have to wait for a while to set, since an egg customer of mine who I told I would send new eggs to after the PO messed them up and then never got back to me tried to call me out in public today as a bad egg seller, even though they're the ones who never got back to me on new eggs, so I PMed them and offered them replacement eggs (again). So if they take that, then I'll have to wait to ship until those go out. So probably I will set around the end of the month.

As for coloring the vent, you have to catch the bird and then squirt the food coloring inside the vent. When they lay an egg, it'll come out colored. So will their poop for a while too, lol, so don't get freaked out by that.

I've mostly had good customers but one was not, I'll just say and it was super stressful. So I know what you're going through. Some people are very hard to please no matter what you do. With the vent coloring do you mix the food coloring with water or just straight? Also do you use the food coloring gel?? That seems it might be easier to apply, lol.

I candled my eggs quick last night. All 18 have little embryos with beating hearts. That's 100% development! I did notice while candling in the dark that some have really poor shell quality. I could feel it on the egg before but seeing it was another thing. Like there's a disturbance toward the pointy end and then the shell gets rough and then super thin. Also a lot are very porus. But all are growing and she did send more extras then I expected. I'm hoping for a good hatch. Let's hope most of these keep developing properly!

Awesome. :fl

I have 5 fresh eggs right now and she hasn't laid yet today. I might have 7 or 8 by Monday. They are yours if you wanna try them. I've just been using them for baking here and there or feeding them to the chickens. If you want them let me know and I'll move them down stairs. I just checked them and the air cells are all tiny.
Definitely marek's and Newcastle.

I'd love to have them. Will talk to hubby this evening and see how dead I would be if I say yes!

Luckily you have plenty of others who will back you up, and know you are a good person to deal with.

I did a very quick candle on a few as I was adding another thermometer yesterday. I can definitely see some veining already in some. I'm a little concerned because I've had to raise the setting on the Brinsea to 101.9 to get it to maintain 99-100 on the Spot Check. So I replaced the battery in the Spot Check, and added a mercury thermometer inside, so we'll see....

Awesome that you've got veining too!! My temp in the brinsea dropped also. It was at 99 before I went to bed and I didn't want to adjust it right before going to bed just in case it shot up. So I turned it up this morning and pulled out my glass thermometer to calibrate, then I'll stick it in. I should pull out my spot check and try it out again. I hated it when I first got it but I'm going to try it today and see how it reads.

My brinsea was off by 10 degrees and had cooked 2 batches before I realized ugh! I seriously thought I was the only one that ever had an issue w/ the brinsea. It's calibrated now using an additional thermometer but way to learn the hard way...

Hi all...after advice;
RE: Helping the hatch & developing air sacks..too wet? What to do? How to help?

I am a newbie. My only experience is I have hatched 2 geese eggs a few weeks ago and had a Silkie egg that developed but never hatched, not sure why so I buried in the back garden after day 35! :(

Currently, I now have 6 Silkie eggs at day 22 in the incubator, but like the previous Silkie, small air sac, moving inside (slightly) but I am concern that they are too wet?? I'm so worried that I'll loose them all! Any advice on what can be done and how to help?? would be be helpful.

I took this photo of Kendra with Smudge on Friday and entered it on the Family and Fowl thread. But since I have such a good head shot of Smudge, can you look at that comb and tell me if Smudge might not also be a dude.... Only one I'm not really sure of yet, and behavior has left no clues. For some reason it won't let me post the photo here, but here's a link to the photo.....

Edited to add: Okay, now it let me post the picture so you can ignore the link.
