Hands on hatching and help

Boy? Then I have to start checking all over again since most of them look like this, just not quite as pronounced because the dark ones' black combs are harder to discern than they are against the white faces. I'm not sure what "streamers" are but I'm assuming they are the longer, more feathery looking thingies in their topknots, right? This is one of the few who who didn't get a 'haircut" so if the others have streamers I've already cut them off. :he I know I have some crowing going on out there and I suspected that at least two of them were fellas.....I may have to take a chair and just sit and see which ones are doing that. After that I have no idea what to do because I have grown very attached to every one of them and am not inclined to cull just because they are boys. Smudge I just wasn't sure of.....catch her him going in and and out of the nests a lot but now I guess I have to figure it's either curiosity or comfort and not preparing for laying at all. Q-Tip was so obvious that I assumed it would be just as easy to tell on the others too. Um, these are tricky little boogers, ain't they?
They are sooooo incredibly hard to sex! I got to the point where I don't even try to guess or assume until they are crowing or laying, which is usually around 6 months. I've had girls turn into boys to many times. Also silkie boys seem to do really well together. I have 4 in the same enclosure right now and all is well. If you do end up with all boys or almost all boys let me know and I can always send you more eggs!
Did a quick day-4 candle, didn't pull any out, just candled in place, but see lots of development already! :yesss:
:yiipchick That's great!! I did my 7 day candle last night and traced my air cells (which were all firm and perfectly round)! Out of 18 shipped eggs from Florida to NY I have 18 healthy looking embryos! It's just nuts. I was not planning on having a big batch of chicks. Thought maybe 4-6 if I was lucky.
The #$@! NH hub has lost eggs I've shipped again :barnie That's it, I'm not shipping out of Vermont again, ever. I'm driving into NY and shipping there.
Did you move out of NY?

I have been followin from afar and decided to join in the fun my first time ever hatching and my eggs are on day 19 I have one external pip and another one chirping at me lol
Good luck on the hatch! This is the exciting part!! :fl
Developments on the bad buyer. They have been banned. Everything they said wasn't true, I had evidence to back this up that I showed to mods, and so I am in the clear and they are gone. But, they could still keep trying to disparage me in other places, which would be just great.
Was this on byc? I'm having an issue now where a customer sent an echeck through PayPal and after I send the eggs the payment was declined. They insisted they are not good on the computer and her daughter was helping her setup up the PayPal and I would get payment right away and now I have not heard back anything from her!

I'm sorry ppl can really be jerks I have had issues in the past but never directly called anyone out they should work it out w/ u! Those leghorn babies are vigorous little things rocking those eggs like crazy so much for trying to set them w/ big air cells up they are pipping all over the place... Stinkers

Yep, this was on BYC. I'm not sure how much I can say but it turns out they scammed at least one other breeder (twice!) and so they're probably mad that their scam didn't work on me.

Well that sucks, can you file a Paypal dispute in this type of situation?

I'm super excited! Keep me posted!

Ok, so, I've began to incubate my eggs a few days ago. And the electricity went out for about 2hrs and the incubator went down to 89 degrees and then when the electricity came on, it end up hitting 106 degrees and it took a few tries but I finally got it back to 100. I'm hoping it wasn't at 106 too long. Has any one had this happen and still had their eggs hatch? Also, my humidity seems to bounce between 50% and 30%. And I do not open it,so, I don't know why it's bouncing around. It's a still air incubator and holds around 40 eggs and it's filled up!

Yes I have. Heat spikes are deadly but if the time was short very short then they may hatch. Egg temperature should be kept constant if possible . What kind of incubator? Have you hatched in it before ? Where are you taking your temperature reading ? Temperature at the top of your eggs is critical and should be 100.5 101.5 degrees in still air . Humidity sounds like your hygrometer is malfunctioning .It is in the safe range though . The temperature around the element will reach anywhere between 104 and 106 or higher every time it comes on . next time you lose power have a backup plan wrap the incubator in towels or blankets and put hot water in 20 oz. water bottles in or around it . If you have a temperature gun you can take the temperature of the egg .If you know the egg is to hot and when you know your temperature is spiking take the top off and let the heat out. And what is a few days ? What kind of thermometer and hygrometer are you using ? Did you calibrate ? And with all that to consider good luck with the hatch

I can't seem to get the temp to be 101 which is what I wanted without it spiking,so, that's why I've left it at 100 deg. When the electricity went out I put big candles around it and it in a box to try and help with the temp. I take the temp from ontop of the eggs. Yes I callibrared beat I could. And yes, when I saw that it had spiked I took the top off so the heat could escape and let the temp go down a little. I'm really hoping that they're alright! I've tried to follow directions best to my ability. And it's confusing about wash or don't wash there's so much controversy on that!!!
