Hands on hatching and help

Hey guys I haven't really been on here in awhile since we haven't been hatching much. We do have 3 eggs under our broody that are due tomorrow. I went out and candled them today and 2 have externally pipped. One of the eggs mama stepped on and cracked the shell. I brought it inside and peeled some of the outer shell away and put cornstarch on the spots that were bleeding. I out vaseline on the exposed membrane and stuck it in the incubator so I can keep an eye on it. Hoping it makes it...

Hey Jenn, how are you feeling? Good luck to your broody and the one you brought inside! :fl

I set nineteen eggs yesterday.  Everything from Black Copper Marans to Easter Eggers to Brahmas.  Can't wait to have rainbow babies! It's my little contribution toward an inclusive, more tolerant world....;-)

Sounds like it will be a fun hatch! Good luck!

I dropped one and cracked it all up didn't do anything but put it back in the hatcher and it hatched and did fine . No blood loss though .   I've had a broody crush the egg as the chick was zipping and kill it before . Hope your doctoring works :fl

K! :hugs I've cracked more eggs then I should have but luckily it always worked out!

I've been working like crazy trying to get the new duck enclosure done. The weather had been great then Sunday morning woke up to freezing temps and snow! So it's not done yet but hopefully this weekend. Why does hardware cloth have to be so expensive?? ;)

The ducks got to play in snow for the first time...

I just need to finish the roof, find away to predator proof around the door frame and move in their pool and house.

Haha we got a skiff of snow like that and six coops of chickens all said 'Thank you no, I'll stay inside all day."
The only ones who would go out in it were my flock of eight rescue Brahmas/Light Sussex who someone abandoned in the woods to die.

Good luck! I would have just put tape on it.

It was beautiful here Saturday. T-shirt weather and sunny...until the sun started going down and the storms started coming through...it has finally stopped snowing. I think my dad said according to the news our area got 8 inches. My girls are locked up in their coops. After I get the driveway cleared out, hopefully, this afternoon, I may open the main door and see if they want to come out for a bit as long as the winds stay down.

I thought about taping it but the whole side was completely broken apart. Chick is still alive this morning. The veining on the exposed membrane looks to have receded but when I try to peel some of the shell off there is bleeding so I put it back. It's chirping this morning so that's a good sign. It looks ready to hatch to me but just don't know anything sure yet so giving it more time..

Same here, Saturday was gorgeous and then the storms started here overnight through Sunday. It was a very heavy, wet snow here so I didn't let any of the chickens out. Just to wet. I feel bad because I only got a 1/4 of the run wrapped in the 6mm plastic. I thought I had enough on the roll from last year but was wrong. I ordered more online but now they have to wait till it gets here. I feel like a bad mommy!

Peeping is a good sign!

I just did my day 14 day candling (a day late) and all 18 SHIPPED eggs are still growing strong! Unbelievable! A little over half the eggs are thin-shelled, white, chalky feeling eggs and they are loosing moisture like crazy. Air cells look big and I've been running between 60-45% humidity. The other half look spot on. So I may lockdown early. We'll see! I just can't believe how I lucked out with this batch of shipped eggs.

Just wanted to update. Chick has fully hatched and is in good health. Its sibling under mama has hatched as well. Just took it back out to its mother and it burrowed right under her. :)

Oh that's sooo good to hear! :yesss:
