Hard Tumor, Clumped Feather Thing on Fern's Chest

Sebaceous cyst? Have you tried expressing it to see if the contents just slide out? Sort of like popping a big pimple....

I took Fern to the vet yesterday (We happen to have an avian vet not too far away). It is an abscess. The vet will be removing it tomorrow for a grand. I will have a very valuable chicken. She is only a year and a half and one of the really sweet ones.

I have a feeling this started during/after her molt. I first noticed a few feathers that were sticking out when her feathers grew out after her molt. The lesson here is to look out for feathers not laying flat after they start to grow back.

I will post some pre and post op pictures.

This is Fern from when we got her a year ago.

No, not a vet but in the medical field. When we first got my cat in 2002, within a week of adopting her from the shelter, we paid over $1000 for emergency vet care for her. Long story but she has food allergies that cause respiratory failure and she was intubated.

Good luck with the chicken, I find it hard to believe that anesthesia for a 3-4lb chicken would cost that much. Can you get a second opinion?

One of our chickens had a really nasty horrible case of bumble foot and we couldn't get the plug out. Her surgery (including anesthesia) was around $350. I thought she was an expensive chicken.

Good luck!

I was surprised about the price. There are not many avian vets.

BEEKISSED - Where in WV are you? We are just east of DC. I will PM you with my phone #, if you can get to me before 8 AM (when I drop her off).
