Hardware cloth on top of run

We are chicken newbies and in the process of re-furbishing an old coop / run. HWC all around and on top. I'm wondering about burying HWC for an apron all around, how deep should this be?
Doesn't need to be deep at all, can be flat on ground and stapled down until grass grows back thru.

I did an apron of at least 18" flat around my hoop coop, using landscape pins to keep it flat.

ETA: the soil wouldn't hold the landscaping pins on one side of the coop, so I got some tent stakes:
