Hatch with me! Placed in bator on 5-13-2010. First hatch!

Congrats to yall !!!! This is our first time with ducks ok so we took the turner out now what? Nothing to make them be early no high temps or anything weird. They are crested mallard/pekin cross. The yolk is going to not be absorbed isn't it? it is still pipping has cracked a little bit bigger area now. We have a still air styrofoam incubator with turner.

The duckling should absorb the yolk as it hatches but it may have a little left over. After you take the turner out, pretend they are chickens and lock them down. They may just be a bit impatient.

ok we did that...BUT I have about 12 chicken eggs in there with them and other duck eggs about 4 in subsequent days (she laid one egg a day we stuck them in as she laid them) How is not turning the others going to affect them?

you will have to turn them by hand or put the turner back in. Can you put the pipping egg in another incubator for lock down. I didn't realize you were doing a multi staggered hatch

Wow looks like everyone is really doing good. Not many casualties which is always good. Got my tracking number yesterday...eggs will be here tomarrow... FINALLY. I felt like I was waiting on eggs to hatch. haha. Should be sticking them in the incubator tomarrow night or Sunday morning, depending on what time they get here. Gonna wait the 12 to 18 hours for them to settle. But I have a small question I thought someone might help me with. I noticed when I was getting everything fined tuned the other day that I have a hard time seeing the water in the bottom of the incubator, and I dont want to open it without haveing a good reason...anyway, do you all think it would hurt if I put in a drop or two of food coloring to see the water level better? Thanks!

I thought about putting food coloring in the water, but I was afraid it would stain the sides and I wouldn't be able to tell when the water level dropped. My husband came up with an idea to run blue painters tape on the inside of the water well. It is only on one side and runs towards the front of the incubator which makes it easier to look down and see the water level and the tiny bubbles that collect on the tape helps too. I can take a picture and post it if you'd like to see how we did it? It might be hard to picture from my description.

I thought I could get a better picture but my incubator is in use. I think you can get the idea of the blue tape running on the inside of the water well. I just made sure the top of the tape is below the top of the water well so I don't over fill it. I hope this is of some help to you
