Hatching day 18

Congrats on the hatch!!!!! I have always found the early chicks to be the most healthy so it looks as if your going to have a run full of healthy chooks! I have two hens sitting as we speak, hatches are expected on the 22nd and then on the 29th...I would not be surprised to find the first batch start hatching by Friday tho as my Java has been one determined momma, the second hen has done the normal getting off the nest once and sometimes twice a day so I expect those to hatch right on time... I promised hubby I would not incubate again this year, but thankfully I get my fix with the broodies so I am good

because technically I am not hatching

Yep, broody hatches don't count

Good luck and keep us posted!

Oh no, that's perfectly normal behaviour

How many have hatched now and how is Early doing?

Early is doing perfect

(Early is in the middle)

Unfortunately only one of the pips made it out. We had a power outage last night (of course while we were sleeping) and I think it got cool enough that the others didn't pull through.

I'm not disappointed though, these were set as a last minute thing after we lost our roo, so we are happy to have gotten anything! I will be setting some more as soon as we get back from vacation. We have two young roos that have just hit puberty and I am anxious to see what they produce. One is a barred/cochin mix and the other is a buff brahma

Thanks for the tips. I didn't think that he would be ready yet, I've only seen him mount a couple of times, but I checked my fertility the other day and it was 80%+. He must be doing his job when I'm not looking LOL, which is the way a good roo should!!! It will be a couple of weeks anyway before we get back from vacation. I found some eggs that I want here on BYC. Frizzled Naked Neck EE's!!!

And I still need some dark egg layers to complete my flock, so I may just order some eggs and fill the extra with my eggs....cause we all know the 'bator HAS to be full!

Day 20 and although I knew something was happening last night I had no doubt today when 4 chicks popped out from under momma, although tempted I am leaving her alone...I'll see them all soon enough ... (my sister in law killed a new chick when she lifted the momma off it and in putting her back down inadvertently crushed one of the chicks under the momma..)

The suspense is KILLING me... We just got a Blue orp 6 months ago and for the last 6 weeks or so he has been the only roo so all these are his... I cant wait to see them!!

This is our boy big ol blue
