I am about 15 to 20mins off 95. I thought we were doing a parking lot drive by but my house is open if that works out better. (as long as you all promise not to be ax murders

)

Haven't killed anyone lately!!! if I were to murder anyone, I think axe would be my LAST choice (way too messy and it would hurt my back!)

And I would be willing to hose down the bottoms of my shoes with lysol prior to getting out of my car, if that helps your peace of mind any. We have taken to carrying it in the car just in case we go somewhere with chickens. I've been very lucky so far but don't want to push my luck!

On that note, having never seen mites, any good webpages on what to look for? I have these five new chickens and I want to check them over, and also my own in case I am missing something.

Alrighty, my marans are done. 7 from Donna, none of the birchens hatched. Two looked like they developed and quit before lock down. I actually lost several from Donna from pipping and zipping the wrong end. Of course, I tried hatching them in a flat. If I hadn't, I'd probably have three or four more babies. But, there are three black, three blue and the last one looks splash (just helped it out, so it's still wet and I can't tell for sure right now). But, hey, seven isn't a bad number, and I got a good variety!

Man I know culling is necessary but it still makes me cry!

I still haven't had to and I am not looking forward to it. I am lucky that I have a friend here at work who processes, so my older culls can all just go to him. but I doubt he'd want to take a chick that wasn't going to make it.

I do know one guy that has a snake he has to feed...I have thought about bringing them in to him so I can help with the circle of life...

Does anyone here know if I have Marraduna Basque and Gold Laced Wyandotte eggs together in the incubator will I be able to distinguish the chicks, or do I need to keep them separate?  I have never hatched either breed before this.  If anyone is looking for GLW chicks, let me know.  I will probably sell all or most of them.  I misread an auction and bid on them thinking they were something else. Duh! LOL

Hmm...I'm not sure what the GLW chicks look like, but I have lots of pics of MB on my laptop if you need them for reference.

Yup (I have an extensive Hosta collection and help my bro in law with his Hosta/Aquatic Garden Nursery).

Jim's definitely more of an expert than I am though! those hostas are fab! I can't WAIT to see how they grow in this year!

Hmm...I'm not sure what the GLW chicks look like, but I have lots of pics of MB on my laptop if you need them for reference.

That would be great if you get a chance to post a few. I am really looking forward to having a breeding pen of the Basque. Everything I have researched on them indicates wonderful breed and attitude.

Here's my RIR story.

A friend was trying to talk me into getting RIR and I kept refusing. I had heard stories of the roosters being mean. Finally I gave in and got 6 juveniles. I still wasn't sold on them but figured I'd hang on to them for a while. As they grew, so did my passion for them. These are the calmest, friendliest birds. Often, I would go into the pen and they would fly up on my shoulder. I finally did some research into the line I have and found out the will be in the breeders family 100 years in 2014. I decided to get some rose comb RIR so I'd have both types so now I have two pens of RIR. I took one to a show in November and she was first place hen. Have I mentioned how much I adore my RIR?

I concur with Jim. I love the ones I got from him. When mine were too small to go up the ramp, and I had to put them into the coop at night, I could just walk up to them at dusk and pick them up without any fleeing or even much squawking. I only have one big mouth (besides mine. LOL) The first time I let them out to free range and they couldn't find their way back to the coop I picked up a couple and the others just followed me back into the pen. Easiest chicks to deal with I have ever had. They are definitely keepers and as soon as I get an open incubator I am going to have to buy some more eggs. I highly recommend them.
