How does it work out to hatch eggs upright? Do you put them in cartons? Do they have to struggle more to get out? Inquiring minds want to know.
You cut the bottoms out of the cartons to allow air flow around the egg. Some people cut the sides down too. I hatch all my eggs shipped, local and my own in egg cartons or egg trays and none have ever had to struggle to get out.

I cut the tops off the cartons and just pop the eggs in. No strugglin, no problems....and SUPER cute when they are sleeping in the cartons spots.
I've had no problems. You put them in the cartons just like you would in your incubator. And they hatch.

Okay guys, I'm in need of a white bresse rooster. I think mine is headed for the chop block. He doesn't walk right. Not graceful at all. So he needs to go. And I was wrong. It was my bresse rooster that was crowing, it's the Tolbunt Polish rooster that has started to crow. Completely forgot about him.
I haven't shipped before but I have a friend with extra roosters. I can try to get you a teenager. PM me.

I don't cut the bottoms out, I have before but haven't lately. They hatch just fine.

i tried coming over here but the computer was not letting me so I posted that I received PP from bigfamily4me if someone can clear?? thanks

I too prefer to hatch in egg cartons. I have found no benefit to removing the bottom.... might just be me, but if they pip upside down it does not help. You do have to check frequently or odd pips. I check several times a day..... I have lost a few that way, but still I think the hatch is way better in the egg carton.

Donna, I did end up with a splash from your eggs! 3 blue, 3 black and 1 splash! I actually lost some, because of using a carton for hatching... one just needed to push out, but pipped/zipped upside down and died before he could push out. Others pipped the bottom and died too... but they only pipped. :(

Is there more likelyhood of pipping upside down in cartons? Can you lay shipped eggs horizontally to hatch?

This is only my second time hatching shipped eggs, the first time I knew nothing about letting them sit for 12-24 hours fat end up before incubating, and then leaving them in cartons for the duration of the incubation. I did hatch 5 out of the 12 I put in the inkie, guess thats not bad for knowing absolutely zilch about hatching shipped eggs

LOL Super blue egg layers

I was so close, a few more guesses and I woulda had it.

Yes, I live on the Outer Banks, but I live on the mainland-ish.

I am excited to report that my Red Bourbons have returned from their untimely "coffee break", so I am back in business catching up on orders.
