Do you turn them? like side to side or just leave them alone?

I incubate them in a plastic egg tray for incubating so they are upright the whole time. For hatching they just stay in the egg carton no turning in lockdown.

As for putting eggs on their side for hatching, I have lost chicks to that too they pip on the side that is down and suffocate. I almost think there is a no win way to do them..... but the egg carton seems to yield more chicks..... it seems anyway.

Donna, I did end up with a splash from your eggs! 3 blue, 3 black and 1 splash! I actually lost some, because of using a carton for hatching... one just needed to push out, but pipped/zipped upside down and died before he could push out. Others pipped the bottom and died too... but they only pipped.

That is why I check them several times a day. My hatcher keeps its humidity when I get in it just fine so I don't have to worry about that. If I am in doubt, I can add a warm dish towel one of those blue ones and it really kicks the humidity up.

Sorry, I have that happen 2-3 a hatch, I just try to catch them before it is too late. I am not there at night though and that is when I will lose some, between 5pm and 11am.

:lau  I was so close, a few more guesses and I woulda had it.

Yes, I live on the Outer Banks, but I live on the mainland-ish.

I love the Outer Banks. I've been to Atlantic Beach back in 1992. I hope to return someday. Now I have BYCers to meet so there's more reason to go.

We hatch with eggs on their sides. However the hatching trays are wire so no issue with a solid surface and pipping towards the bottom. I also candle all eggs as we lock them down and position with air cell dips facing up on all eggs. This is from hatching geese and works well for all eggs.

I'm going to have to get some of the incubator trays for hatching in, instead of paper flats. The turkey eggs certainly did well in the carton. I've gone back and forth over the years between laying down and carton hatches. Seems like when I carton hatch, I get more bottom pips, but it could be pure coincidence.

Is there more likelyhood of pipping upside down in cartons? Can you lay shipped eggs horizontally to hatch?

This is only my second time hatching shipped eggs, the first time I knew nothing about letting them sit for 12-24 hours fat end up before incubating, and then leaving them in cartons for the duration of the incubation. I did hatch 5 out of the 12 I put in the inkie, guess thats not bad for knowing absolutely zilch about hatching shipped eggs

NO.... it just happens. I don't usually let mine sit before I put them in. I turn them too, I just don't have a way to treat them special, but I think being in the egg carton so the air cell can stay in the same basic position is what helps most with shipped eggs.

I've shrink wrapped too many, so with the marans hatch, I decided to let everything go until 12 hours after hearing peeping. :( on the bright side, only the splash was shrink wrapped, but still. Seems I can't win, lol. Everything is different with the sportsman. Maybe I should buy another 1588, put two turners in the hatching tray of the cabinet and then just hatch in the 1588.

ok let me rephrase...during incubation, do you turn them side to side in the carton or just let them be?

My bator turns them side to side 45 degrees 6 times a day in the egg trays. The air cell is always UP. You have to turn eggs so the chicks will not stick to the egg. Some people mark them with an 'X' and an 'O' one on each side so they know how to turn them every time.
