The thought of death by fire terrifies me.

Having been resuscitated from drowning when I was young, I can tell you that there are a couple of brief moments of fear but then a very peaceful tranquility. Not so bad.

As crazy as it sounds (yep - 2 near deaths), I also almost died from blood loss a few years ago. That is a very surreal way to go...the blood loss eliminates the fear response I guess. It creates a very calm and detached state of mind. Knowing this from firsthand experience, I really have no qualms about bleeding a bird for processing.

Funny you should say that. When I was young, very young, my half sister tried to drown me in my gram's pool and I was under for some time. I remember going to the bottom, making a few steps towards the ladder, stopping and thinking it was great that I could breath under water. Then I looked up and saw my mom and dad looking down at me (my dad was diving in, actually). I don't remember anything between that and not being allowed back in after I insisted I was fine. I also had an issue with my first epidural. My son and I's blood pressure dropped so low and all I wanted to do was sleep. I bet blood loss is the same. I just wouldn't want that panicked feeling that goes with the suffocation and drowning.

After setting some bantam choco orp eggs for krafty and pysanki I will start filling my swaps for them. That is provided I can break my little broody black orp hen.
Squeeeeee!!!!!
I can't believe the broodiness going on! The young orp and my BLRW- never in my life have I heard of a hen being broody for over 2 months! If the eggs under her don't hatch by next Monday I am giving her 19 day old eggs that have been in my incubator.
That's what I'm gonna do with mine next week if they are still broody by then...All the eggs in my 'bator are gonna have real mommas.
Well I am heading Northwest tomorrow morning. I have a truck load of chickens and chicks coming with me!! There are a few it will be hard to hand over to thier new owners! But they are all doing well. CPL I will see you Friday morning.
I hope you had a good trip despite our uncharacteristically cold weather! and thanks so much for your willingness to ferry all of our babies around!!!!

I agree. It is VERY difficult to do, but the dysfunctional chicks are either given away when someone buys others and is interested in a free one to go with the rest or they are put out of their misery. The way I see it is I either put 1 down now or end up with a whole flock of birds with the same issue from bad genes passed on later that have to be put down. It is sad FOR SURE, but necessary for the better of the whole flock.

:gig I have to tell this story...I agreed to let a lady come by and try to sell us an air purifier. Free stuff and I could use one anyway, so why not? She called just now to set up an appointment. Usual shpeal about how great the product is, yada yada. She then asks some standard questions.
"Do you have any allergies?"
"No."
"What kind of vacuum do you use?"
"Filter."
Do you have any pets in the house?"
"Just the chickens."
"CHICKENS!?!?!???!??? In the house????"
"Yes, the babies are in the house."
"Oh."

:gig I had a real hard time not spitting out my drink...

Quote: So true..... great read too. I use the Car Seat to HOLD the feed so it does not spill.... normal right? Hubby puts it in the trunk..... well he is rethinking that... he dumped a 5 gal bucket in the trunk. Still there most of the crumbs are anyway. It was just too cold to clean it any more...... OHHH I could put chickens in there to eat it

Normal right? Feed cost too much to waste it.
