Crystal I have nine beautiful moose eggs waiting on the dining room table for my son. About 4:10 this afternoon you should be able to feel the love.

My Chocolate Orps are either eating their eggs or just not laying (I did find yolk on one of the eggs I collected 2 days ago, but I have gotten eggs since). My Ameraucanas are eating eggs - all of them. My MFCs are broody and I need to trim their butts. Fertility is unknown on the LF Orp project yet (just set the first test batch since the butt trimming/plucking). It has not been a good start to my week so far. Euthanizing two birds Monday, egg eaters and broodies Tuesday. What will tomorrow bring? Oh, probably the loss of a chick since I have one that got squished under a chick pile up over night.
What really stinks is the swap is finally moving and there are offers I want! All I have to offer is mixed breed duck eggs at the moment.

As for shipping, I sent a box to WA last year that got crushed and it was double boxed. I replaced them even though it wasn't my fault because I am passive and I want to please everyone (I try anyways). This year I have only sold 3 rounds of eggs outright and the rest were swapped. One batch of eggs I sent 18, all 18 were fertile and 17 of the 18 are still developing. Celtic Oak tells me all of her eggs from me didn't develop. The Ams she got from me were from the same pen asn the 18 that were fertile for the other person. The MFC I can understand since they have been varying in fertility. I know I have had some very bad experiences with shipped eggs over the years. Usually the worst to hatch are the ones that were packed the worse. I have only had one box crushed. This year, though... This year there have been delays, bad packing and really bad hatches.

Betta, I totally understand. But, shipped eggs are a gamble, as we all know. Some of these eggs are worth more than the $17+ we are paying/swaping for them. it would just be nice if a) they are packed well and b) the PO does it's job getting the packages to us on time and not destroyed!

Well hello everyone!!

First off I need to comment on caj's son... I really hope you're able to get things figured out with the insurance and such and I would also be willing to be that Mayo will help you get that figured out, too... lots of prayers and thoughts going your way, for sure...

I must say I was kind of relieved to read that so many of you have also had trouble with your shipped eggs, I've been sitting here trying to figure out what the heck I am doing wrong when I get >85% hatch on my own eggs, down to nothing, on the shipped eggs... I had some of TNB's, one hatched which eventually died, a big bunch from Papa, none, a side swap with juststruttin, one little SFH, which I had to help and fortunately it is now doing great... My easter hatch, all shipped , 30 eggs and had 2 little NH's from DM hatch (which are doing great, BTW)... I can't use the emoticons here at work, but it makes me want to cry a river!!

I, too have been feeling apprehensive about all the plant starts I've sent out to only get one or two or NO chicks in return, it's a lot of work on my part for nothing back... I was sooo relieved when COF said she would swap my egg swap for chicks with the chicks I was able to get in the Easter swap, HUGE relief.

But my question also is, I do have several eggs make it to lockdown that don't hatch, don't even internally pip, fully formed chicks... Why does that happen?? NO temp spikes, adequate ventilation, etc.... But from my own eggs, again, at least 85% are hatching... It's extremely frustrating!!!

COF is sending my chicks express today I think, too.... my turn for nailbiting!!!!!!!

well, that's annoying, why would this computer do that?? the above reply had spaces to make it easier to read, and it submits it all in one paragraph so no one can read it GAH!!!!! I am at work, so maybe I'm being silently punished, lol...

I have never had a box of eggs that have arrived to me that were smashed or beat. A little puncture every now and then. I have also never had anyone ever report that a box had been damaged that they have received from me. I have had 2 reports of small cracks in one or two eggs but that was it. Obviously if they are going down a belt with other packages and a heavy one happens to fall on top of an egg box- more than likely it is going to crack one or more eggs but, I must have good luck with my post office. I do know that from my main post office here in JC that the packages leave here at 5:45 and are at our main sorting facility in Knoxville, TN by 7pm. They are usually leaving Knoxville by 11pm on to the next main distribution center and are at their destination in 2 days (almost always). I watch my tracking #'s like a hawk. After everyone's horror stories it scared me to death. I have gotten a pretty good relationship with our post office. They always call me when packages arrive and allow me to come in the delivery area when the building is closed (there really is always someone there- really). I figure that as many eggs as I am mailing out and packages received in to me, they may be getting the idea that I am seriously supporting their paycheck every week. For this.... I think they take extra good care of my packages. My delivery guy even tells me all the time that if I can't make it to the post office in the morning he can make me priority on his delivery schedule and he will make sure my package is taken care of. I have noticed though what problems I do have is on the upper east coast. I am pretty confident someone up there hates all of us chicken people.

I have only ever had one smashed box. I, like many of you, have had bad hatches from January on. My hatches all the way through December were great. I have eggs shipped from many of you lately that either candled clear or made it to lockdown and then either pipped straight up into the aircell, but not through the shell or didn't pip at all. I still think it comes down to shipping--either odd things are happening on flights with pressurization or xrays are being enforced. Something is damaging them somewhere.

I just got an email my first batch of Chocolate Bantam Orps are being shipped today. I won 9 of them off of rarebreeds auction.

I agree. Something is going on. I know I've had some say my CCL eggs I've sent either were clear or didn't hatch. Definitely not the eggs. I put 19 in 2.5 weeks ago and I pulled one for blood ring. The rest are growing nicely. I can't get eggs from Texas. I've never had any hatch from that state. Ever.
