Speaking of all of this has me thinking about banding everyone. I can tell most of my cornish cross apart by combs and personalities, but I couldn't rely on identification for something like med administration or anything more important than just knowing who's typically in the nest, who is friendlier or nippier with treats and who is picking on who. Anyways, my point in that ramble is, what bands are best for a large varied flock? Do you guys do like assorted sizes bags or buy bags for eachh and every size of bird that you have?

No one ever enters any fenced area here. Our state inspectors dont even ask to, so I sure as heck wont let Joe Public. We handle all the birds, buyers can look not touch, once they buy we plce them in their crate or box and they can touch all they want. I am so happy waterfowl dont pick stuff as easily as chickens. Which of course has me all heeby jeeby with wanting to add new chickens this year too.

I meant to say I showed him the coops he never went in behind any fences. That I did not allow. They intimidated us into letting them in. We know better now, if it happens again. ;)

Wow... very interesting last few pages.... So now I have some questions... since there are sicknesses that have similar symptoms to MG, what do you do if a bird starts looking ill?? There is not a university around here that does testing, and I don't know if I could afford to have all my birds tested by a vet... If Denagard helps with symptoms but leaves the birds carriers, what good is that?

I guess I should just never invite anyone to my house because I free range! I have been lucky so far. but luck will only last so long. I do quarantine for 4 weeks any bird coming in. and most are chicks...maybe that is a good thing! but I lost my Dorking roo a month ago and Craig Russell will be bringing down a couple of Colored Roos for me next month (we will be doing one of those clandestine parking lot meetings over off of the interstate as he passes though on his way to a heritage breed show down south)

and I am wondering if I can slap together a portable bachelor pen and temporarily keep it at a friends house until I know they are safe...is that too paranoid? not sure I want to Quarantine adult birds in the house.

Okay, what's MG?

I keep plastic boot covers now. They are both for visitors to my place, and for me to wear when I visit others or go to flock swaps or whatever. I'm decidedly paranoid now, as I lost me entire flock to MG this past fall. When my birds started getting sick, I took six of the worst to the state testing lab for euthanasia and diagnosis. Turns out MG is reportable. Every chicken was put down, although we did manage to get our turkeys tested out. Three months on state quarantine. Not fun. At this point, any sign of illness, and I'm killing the bird. And total quarantine for incoming birds. Despite all that, since MG can be passed through the egg and carried by wild birds, I could still get it again.

MG...mycoplasma gallisepticum
