I guess we are lucky in that we get no visitors most of the time. and the ones we do get occasionally think we are nuts to raise chickens...LOL they have cats and fish. not so worried about them

Only have one roo for now, so Barnevelders are the only purebred eggs I have.

I was kind of worried that Xander wasn't fertilizing the chickens until today, but was thrilled to finally see him fertilizing one of them. He doesn't force his way with them like Spike used to. (Spike had caveman manners) if they won't squat for him, then he leaves them alone. but one of the girls squatted and he seemed to know what he was doing!

it was actually a pretty civilized encounter. I like the guy!

4 of my eggs from the original 6 are still growing!!!

I got a better flashlight at lowes today and a plumbing fixture to make a cradle for the egg and I think I now understand about the detached air bubbles that people were talking about.
all 6 of the Silver laced Brahma eggs I got have detached air cells. does that mean they won't grow? I am bummed.

I still couldn't see into the Marans eggs.

i have had eggs with detached air cells hatch, I set them upright for the first 4 days and then they are in an automatic turner so they stay mostly upright, I also hatch them in a carton so they stay upright. There is a lower hatch rate with detached air cells but I have hathed a few so it is possible!

I just hatched one that came with a completely detached aircell also. I only let it sit for about 48 hrs before I started rotating. It was still completely detached at 6 days when I candled, but sometime between then and lockdown, it reattached. I had 100% hatch from that batch of shipped SFH. I have to find out what she is feeding her birds!

ETA: pic - not real good, but you can never have too many pis of little fuzzybutts!

Oh, PRETTY!!! And wow! That's a GREAT hatch rate!

Came home tonight to see huge raccoon in neighbors yard. She hates my chickens and has even ask me to get rid of them and tear down the barn as is not an "appealing" view from her side window (there are 2 houses close to us - it was a mom/dad, son and daughter in thr beginning-no other houses within 4 miles ) my husband saw her putting out scraps by a big tree next to our lane. It appears she is "feeding" the raccoon! It is within sight of my barn. Why do some people have to be so mean? She has only lived here a year and has done nothing but cause trouble. We are not even on speaking terms and both now have lawyers...... Just needed to vent.

So I just ordered me a new laptop!!!

Yes, I know I have 2 already but this is a special one. It's a gaming laptop. My absolute first love before chickens (I know, how can that be?) was gaming. I would spend hours on my computer playing RPG games. Loved it. Then I met my DH and grumpy isn't much of a gamer. So I sort of stop playing but missed it. Now I have 4 months alone and darn it, I'm going to game again!!!!

So if anyone is in need of a laptop, let me know. I will be getting rid of my 2 year old laptop since I don't need 3.
What did you game with? I just got of a raid organier jag that lasted 6 years. I am both more relaxed and more bord, lol.
Can anyone here explain paint silkie color genetics? I see them most of the time in pens with white and black but sometimes other colors too. Will a group of only paint silkies produce other colors? Do you need to keep them with other colors for some reason?
Paint genetics are not 100% understood. Its not dominant and it will go "light" like splash if you just breed paint to paint. So people look for good blacks to add. Also it has pink skin pop up so black is good to help with some of those issues. That's all I know.
I think mostly it was a problem because of the other eggs and me pulling the tray out. I think that egg must have gotten rolled to the wrong side and couldn't zip properly

Good reason to hatch in cartons, I had a lot of silkies get stuck and have to be saved from drowning, its one of the reason I do upright now.
I can ship bobwhite if that will help.
I should have eggs in a couple of weeks. But my pharoahs are mixed with Italian buffs, so you'd get both.

Is it 400 lumes or over? My marans eggs take the full 400 lumes, and while i can see inside them, I cant see early veining, but can see movement.
I go read for a day and you people do 500 posts! yeesh.

Why do people do that? I just don't get it. I finally, at 48, have accepted the fact that there really are people who are simply petty, miserable, small-minded, and vicious who take some consolation or even delight in attempting to make everyone around them as miserable as they are. I'm just as glad I don't understand what it'd be like to be that way.
